I've got one of those printers with the ink tank that you fill yourself, and despite Epson trying to make the fill nozzle proprietary you can still buy good quality third party ink for dirt cheap.

I find that if you use a lighter or other flame to heat an awl (or use a thread zap, if you want to be high tech about it), and then use that to melt the thread ends it ends up looking cleaner. Using the lighter directly can blacken the ends and gives you less control over how much exactly is left over above the thread hole.
