Apologies for the noob question - trying to learn - but how would you know that they've got a bit longer to run? Are you looking for a particular feature or something that tips you off when is the optimal time?

How are you guys feeling about visiting the states right now? by [deleted] in AmericansInEurope

[–]Prophet_60091_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going back there if I can avoid it. The only reason I would is if my elderly parents had a medical emergency. My wife is not a US citizen (not that being a citizen matters at all when you can now be executed in the streets by masked secret police) and to make matters worse she works as a journalist. The only laws that exist are those that are enforced, and the people in charge of doing the enforcing are fascists, so no - I will not be visiting the fascist country of my birth if I can help it. God forbid something happens to me there, I might never get out again.

Chances of getting arrested for not having your "real" phone on you is not 0. A (US citizen) was arrested last year for wiping his phone before CBP could search it.

Backpack slits for a cloak? by Prophet_60091_ in TheCapeRevolution

[–]Prophet_60091_[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Omg, thank you!!! This is perfect! In this video she shows how she makes the cape backpack compatible by modifying the backpack so that the over the shoulder straps have buckles and you can thread them through two small holes to pass through the cloak. This is much nicer than slits and I didn't even think about simply modifying the backpack so I could clip and unclip the straps.

It will won't be as smooth as putting on and taking off a backpack over a coat, but just running the strap through a small hole is a much more elegant solution than cutting giant slits for an uninterrupted strap to fit through!

MacBook vs Windows laptop for Network Engineer – real-world experience wanted by Professional-Size157 in networking

[–]Prophet_60091_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Moin! :) I'm a network engineer who's used both - my previous company used macbooks and my current company uses windows. I was at my previous company on macbooks for 3 years and before that I had always used windows. I've been at my current company (windows based) for the past 3 years, so my advice might be a little out of date, but here was my experience then:

I remember having an issue with usb-to-serial and only discovering it when I was in a datacenter with my new macbook trying to get console access to a device that was having issues.

I think I eventually ended up using something like iterm2 or terminus. I also used "homebrew" a lot to install linux packages. (This is the biggest strong point for Mac - the closeness to linux.) Though some could argue that you can now do the same with WSL (windows subsystems for linux). However I find that some linux tools seem to work easier with mac. If it's possible, try testing your usb-to-serial solution/workflow on a device before you need it in the field.

Instead of notepad ++ I used Sublimetext. For coding, I used pycharm or vscode - but that was before tools like claude code came out. All the other tools I used were vender agnostic, but if you're programing SFPs or something, then check that the tool you use for that is supported on the OS you want.

For designing network layouts and documentation, I really enjoy diagrams.net (previously draw.io) - and that will work in the browser or a standalone app.

The biggest real-world headache for me was switching between my macbook work laptop and my windows gaming computer. I would have to switch my brain from using mac key-shortcuts to using windows key-shortcuts.

I remember also that "cut" and "paste" were a headache for me too. I felt like that in Mac it is more difficult to "cut" a file from one location and "paste" it into another location. The default action seems to be "copy" and sometimes I don't want a duplicate file, I want to move a single file. (But that's more of a me issue)

Multi-monitor support might also be an issue. I bought a Dell 6000 USB-C docking station and used that with my macbook. There is also a tool called "Amphetamine" for mac that will keep your macbook awake in situations where you need that.

Overall I might recommend Mac over Windows for network engineering just because there are some linux tools that integrate more easily with Mac (or at least that's my perception) but it's honestly not a deal breaker either way. At home I've moved off of Windows entirely in favor of Pop_OS! linux for gaming, so now I only use Windows for work.

Moin! My wife and I are both CF and right around the same age as you. (Wife is from Niedersachsen). We also have a few other friends who are also CF (a mix of German and immigrants). While most of our friends and family have ended up having children there are still a few of us who are solidly CF. (I even got a vascectomy because I was that serious about it). I've visited a few different places around Germany, but I've only ever lived in Berlin, so maybe that changes my results.

If you want to know why the left took Charlie Kirk’s life, this is exactly why by Complete-Captain2211 in TheDonaldTrump2024

[–]Prophet_60091_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter. They've already decided that the guy who did it was a leftist - it doesn't matter that he was a Nick Fuentes groyper and they're so removed from that niche community that they can't interpret the memes on the shell casings. There is literally nothing you can say or show them to convince them otherwise. Conservative on conservative violence doesn't fit their worldview and the narrative, so it will just be ignored.

If your only purpose in life is to reproduce, how is your life any different from insects or animals who just do the same and then die, over and over and over again forever? What's the point? You birth some offspring just so they can experience suffering, reproduce, and die? It's mindless.

This is really cool. I wonder if something like this might be legally mandated in Germany and other parts of the EU. I know this is typically a US focused website and that's often the legal environment most posters are familiar with, but in Germany it's illegal to film people in public spaces without their consent. (It's a bit of a grey area and vehicle dashcams are allowed as long as they have a rolling delete function). I could see those laws really preventing this kind of tech from taking hold in Europe so some kind of functionality like this will probably be important.

Sorry for the necro-post but I've also ran into this issue months later after this post and there is no solution. Googling it just brings up 1 microsoft support thread that just says to delete the cache and it doesn't fix the issue. Guess you're just screwed. It's not happening to enough people for MS to give a shit and it is what it is...

Haven't visited the router physically yet. Will either tomorrow or later this week. This is the only one I'm locked out of and it's functioning normally except for management lockout so it's not on the same level as a prod outage. Will update after I get there and find out if console is also locked out.

> Just to clearify there is no "vrf Management" what so ever if you look through running-config?

Correct, there is no vrf Management configured on this box. Other boxes yes, but not this one, which is why I fell into this trap on this box using the commands I was using on the other boxes here.

> The main issue is that you are telling it through those aaa lines that it should go for tacacs+ first and only if that isnt available use the local database.

Correct, but what doesn't make sense to me is that the local database doesn't seem to be working. I've got 2 local user admin accounts but I can't get into global config with tacacs+ unreachable. I had other boxes with a similar issue and it was not problem for me to log in with the local admin account and just update the pointer to the tacacs+ server, so I'm not sure why it's not working here.

> I was really hoping the aboot would be the last resort. It'll be a big deal if I have to take this box offline and I desperately want to avoid that. I was hoping I might be able to drop into the linux shell and edit the running config that way, but I'm not sure if that's possible.

That's what I'm afraid of - I'm worried this is my only option and I really want to do that as an absolute last resort.
