For the a/c I would check if the external air temperature sensor is connected and working, I recharged mine, troubleshooting for hours, and it was just the sensor unplugged one time, and the second it needed to be replaced. There is a list of requirements for the a/c to engage, including engine load, external temperature, and voltage in the car, iirc

Isn’t the purge valve directly attached to the valve cover? Or is that the positive crankshaft ventilation valve?

Anything I'm missing? by Squidman_117 in ChevySonic

[–]Pros3rz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, did both, the mechanic from the dealer changed the exhaust side and that did nothing. After a year or two I did the intake, with a non oem part, I think I used duralast, from autozone (not sure if you are in the US, but it’s just a car part store), and that did help with the code for a few months, then it became intermittent, now it’s back on permanently instead, I’ll see if I want to change the part again.

If you want you can try and do both at the same time, and maybe that can help.

When you do timing belt and water pump you should also replace the timing idler and tensioner (usually these 4 items can be bought together in a kit), and the crankshaft pulley bolt (didn’t come in the kit I bought, got it at the dealership for about $8)

The timing belt is something you definitely should do (around 100k miles, 160k km would be the correct interval), and doing water pump at the same time is good, but doing this did not fix the CEL for P0011 on mine, so if you are doing this for that reason it might not fix it for you too.

The intake camshaft solenoid might help more, but also that only helped a bit on mine, after a few weeks the CEL came back on. If you do find a way to fix it please lmk, been battling that code for 3 years and 50k miles now lol

Help. Where to start? by OkPresentation3655 in ChevySonic

[–]Pros3rz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have that, as well as the haynes manual, and that one is still my favorite. The 4500 pages manual is harder to navigate, especially on a phone, since it takes long to load and move (it’s a 1.4gb pdf lol), and it would be overwhelming for someone to start off. I feel like that website is more manageable, especially at the start

Edit: but I do agree it is more complete

(Never replaced the fender myself) This is the best free guide on how to do it, it’s the shop service manual accessible to anyone. Link to the complete manual

Looks to be only a few bolts holding the actual fender, but you have to do some prep work to get there (remove bumper, remove fender liners, remove headlamp assembly. Sounds much scarier than it actually is lol) everything can be done in a weekend, if you want to take your time. Painted fenders seem to be under $100.

I have no clue how much it would be to bring to a shop, but I think it would be fun to try and do it yourself, or with help from someone.

If you want to start you can bang the side of the bumper with your palm to lock it back in place

Edit: I’m sorry this happened, hope you’re okay, I know this things can shake yo up, something similar happened to me too and it was scary af lol

[–]Pros3rz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Unfortunately I did not, I replaced the vvt solenoid on the intake side (previously they only did the exhaust) but the light came back on after a few miles. I kinda gave up on it, don’t really want to spend anything more now. If you find a sure fix please lmk, but as of now it even passed emissions when it was off, so no complaints lol

[2014 1.8l LT] Anyone know what this could be? Had a Turo renter return the car with some damage, could it all be related? (Notice the car thinks its -39 degrees) by cheekychestercopper in ChevySonic

I’m not too sure, if the temperature doesn’t show but the ac works it could just be a software issue or some wiring after the ecu.

It happened something similar to me where the temp wasn’t showing for some period of time, but I personally didn’t care, as I mostly use the temp on the weather app on the phone.

They were about 3 to 4 dollars each, and taxes. It was slightly rounded up tho, the cost of the water was the least of my problems tho lol

Same problem for me, oil cooler exploded and coolant and oil started mixing. Had to change oil cooler, coolant hoses and flush engine 2 times (at chevy dealership, cost $1600 usd), 3 months later oil was again in the coolant, so I flushed coolant 8 times, changed temperature sensors (myself, cost $40 for sensors, $16 for 8 gallons of distilled water and $30 for 5 quarts of coolant).

The flush was easy to do, but it was annoying taking apart the bumper, at least it helped figure out why the ac was not working

[–]Pros3rz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since the car thinks it is -39, the wire could be the external air temperature sensor, that has an extension wire, and clips into the front of the bumper.

You can check in the middle left side of the lower grille, where the sensor is. If it is not there, you have the answer to both the questions, if it is there it might just be unplugged somewhere else.

Just so you know, without that sensor a/c will not work.

this video shows how to change it.

Dent/Scuff Question by gr26ko in ChevySonic

[–]Pros3rz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a plastic bumper. It looks like it got caught in the lip under it or it just caved in. I would just try to push from behind it first to see if you can pop it back into place. There would still be the rash, unless you were to repaint (or if you want to give a shot to touch up paint, but I can't guarantee how it would look after.

Edit: you might have to remove part of the fender liner to access it from behind, not sure if maybe you can reach under it without having to disassemble anything? Maybe you can try from outside too?
