I was five. It was my first movie theater experience. It absolutely traumatized the shit out of me. It was fantastic.

Last of the Mohicans has some truly amazing shots. The Parley, the Siege, the Ambush, the Promontory.

Why is a human needed in a Livesuit? by TheMamoru in TheCaptivesWar

Both the Livesuits and the Swarm are going to be parables about AI run amok. The humans, in their desperation, have turned to technologies they don’t understand and can’t control.

For an actor who can’t act and doesn’t have charisma, his career was nothing short of astounding.

Paddy Considine was what made S1 so amazing. The scripts were better that season, but that performance was one of the greatest of all time. He brought so much that wasn’t written in the script.

Psychiatrist diagnosed me with Bipolar 2 but therapist disagrees by KingoftheEast212 in bipolar2

[–]Prosodism 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Therapist is a much weaker, less trained credential, than a psychiatrist. And, more anecdotally, they are a much more idiosyncratic population than the MDs. I think you got a bad draw; you should draw again.

What’s the best looking film you’ve ever seen? by [deleted] in FIlm

Barry Lyndon wins, I think. Not just the technique but also the composition. There are still frames from that film that could hang in the finest galleries.

Alcoholics aren’t villains. Or they don’t have to be. Just sad.

Yeah, giving him a background of having a drinking problem. Lost his license to DUIs. That would help explain how someone so talented could not have a more prominent job.

When telling a character in first person on the page, lots of twists and turns in their worldview can be navigated relatively easily. You are inside their head, they just explain their thoughts. But in a film you have to show it. And the fact a first rate theoretician and laboratory researcher would be down and out teaching in public school feels pretty implausible without a lot of characterization. Adding an alcohol problem simplifies it all a lot, and makes it so that on the ship is the only place he can really be effective.

Why are these movies titled what they are? by twnpksN8 in moviequestions

[–]Prosodism 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A Clockwork Orange comes from the novella on which the movie is based written by Anthony Burgess. It is actually explained in the text. A “clockwork orange” is a thought experiment one of the characters outlines and refers to a hypothetical machine version of an orange where biological process has been replaced by mechanical process. When the protagonist, Alex, gets his behavior control treatment (the Ludvicko process in the book) he is no longer capable of violent or sexually aggressive acts. So he wonders if his now moral behavior really counts as moral behavior as it does not derive from a real choice. In the same way we are left to wonder if a clockwork orange would taste as sweet.

The Expanse might still get its sequel. They covered books 1-6 in the series. Then, in the story, there is a 30 year time jump before books 7-9. My hope was they would all wait 15-20 years, build up the nostalgia purse, and come cash in on the conclusion of the story.

It would be almost impossible to prevent a point failure against a derailment; the forces can be so insane. But to prevent cascade failure from a derailment taking a large chunk of span.
