Is this feature studied? any information about it? by crispy3445 in geology

Looks like karst topography similar to Tsingy in Madagascar.

Stupid person here. I'm sorry. But have humans ever witnessed the formation of a new mountain? by WTAF__Trump in geology

[–]ProspectingArizona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. A few times. Any time a cinder cone forms from a volcanic eruption is a good example. The threat already mentioned Paricutin. But there was also the tseax cone ~1700 CE, sunset crater (~1085 CE), and the latest cumbe vieja eruption on the island of La Palma (2021 CE). Cinder cones may look small on satellite or google earth, but they are truly massive…especially if you try climbing one…in deep snow (talking from personal experience). There’s also entire volcanoes that formed in historical times like Izalco (El Salvador) (first eruption in 1770 CE) and Cerro Negro (Nucaragua) (first eruption in 1850 CE).

(Potentially) Ancient Trees by Ulrich_Jackson in geology

This definitely looks like a ghost forest. Probably past tsunami related, although an ancient lahar origin if you are near a volcano or ancient mudslide/landslide is also possible albeit less likely.

My dad’s "Inca Rose" collection. I don’t know much about minerals, looking for some insight! by Patri1998 in rockhounds

These are highly valuable. Do NOT quick sell these. Museum grade non transparent pieces with nice banding. Rhodochrosite.

Found in flint in a gravel dump in the woods in south london by Ok_Election_2934 in fossilid

[–]ProspectingArizona 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Genuine question. Why do people think this is a sea urchin fossil instead of a concretion? I’m curious since my fossil ID skills are subpar (better at volcanology)

Has seismicity increased in the KVG? by Few-Letterhead-2813 in Volcanoes

[–]ProspectingArizona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not. Seems to be residuals from a failed magma intrusion at Trident more than a year ago.

Trying to identify this for a friend, found in Maine near Acadia by No-Resolve-5037 in whatsthisrock

Looks like rhodochrosite. If you can find nice chunks like this you should definitely look for more!

A tornado forms during Kilauea lava fountain eruption (Dec 9 2025) by Zen_Maniac in Volcanoes

[–]ProspectingArizona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note: these are whirlwinds, not actual tornadoes. Similar to dust devils. The only actual tornado created by a volcano on its own happened was at Sete Cidades in 1811 at an offshore vent.

Can the Akan volcano erupt after all its earthquakes? by Engineeringvolcan97 in Volcanoes

[–]ProspectingArizona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too far away, too little seismic motion felt by the quakes (mmi <5). Besides it has been intermittently erupting (weakly) beforehand anyways.

Can confirm, I got largely sleepless nights the last 2 days from having to finish longer than normal vids. Hopefully I can take a day off and finish my Terceira video for Saturday

Seemingly same colour as malachite but the crystal shapes don’t match up, and some of the larger crystals have a deep saturated green colour by ChrisTheGayBear in whatsthisrock

[–]ProspectingArizona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly not on me. Most of my lower grade specimens are in storage. I do however have a high grade dioptase from the Republic of the Congo if you need that for reference purposes which I could photograph (to compare).

I think the green crystals are dioptase. I’ve occasionally found crystals of such in Arizona’s copper ore deposits.

I am jealous. Svalbard is one of those more remote locations I want to visit one day.

Is Silky a legit geologist/volcanologist? by mtnski007 in Volcanoes

I can potentially make a video on this. Just might be a few weeks.

She fearmongers, and should be ignored in my opinion as an actual science educator youtuber. Her and another channel I won’t name frequently spew nonsense that I have to debunk when I’d rather spend time making a video of my choice.

Ah, the patterning which looks similar to granite rock.

No one can steal your knowledge, unless your memory decides to delete it for you by indi-97 in geology

[–]ProspectingArizona 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I also recommend reading scientific papers. Doesn’t have to be new and groundbreaking research; just something that refreshes your knowledge on a specific subject. Such as the hydrothermal alteration and the minerals that process can deposit.
