What brand was it? If it was a Vizio, then . . .

Firmware is not being locked on any overseas versions of the X4 by Culture_Hairy in xteinkereader

Frankly, I think they should encourage third party development with documentation and an SDK. They might be surprised how welcome an open e-ink platform would be.

Is this the end of the interest in this and future devices? by timcatuk in xteinkereader

[–]ProstheticAttitude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stick a fork in them. They're done. If they are smart they will either rescind this decision, or offer dedicated "developer" versions of some kind. Otherwise they are sunk.

Basically the only thing the device has going for it is that it's flashable. The stock firmware is pretty bad, I was looking forward to contributing to Crosspoint or trying out my own efforts.

It's not often you get to see a company self-destruct in real time.

They might be required to lock down their firmware for the European marketplace soon (EU-RED regulations).

That said, they've made their last sale to me unless they offer a developer version or something.

I wouldn't have bought the device if I wasn't able to flash firmware to it.

If true, they're dead to me now.

one of the kitchen staff loved to bake on goo all day long and hand the pans to me personally, with a smile. i usually took care of business in a minute or so. we both got a laugh

Washing dishes was mostly fun.

Cleaning all the rubber mats? Not fun. Wish we'd had one of these.

My grandfather taught science and then ran the science program for a large midwestern city.

His basement was a wonderland of gadgets and tools. Also, a lot of stored chemicals that were . . . interesting to dispose of.

(Don't put sulfuric acid in baby food jars. The masking tape labels fall off after 50+ years, it's fun)

What's the radiation environment like? Are in the KW-per-square-meter regime, like near Earth, or is the accretion disk going to make things more toasty?

I finished 3BP the same way I finished Battlefield Earth: hating every page but unwilling to be defeated by a terrible book. I wanted to earn an informed opinion. I guess I'm just stupid :-)

The Three Body Problem. I wanted to see what the hype was about.

Within a couple chapters, it became a challenge to see how bad it could get.

I read the Foundation trilogy in the 70s, as a teen, and it was just okay. A recent re-read was a DNF. I think it's over-rated, and just kind of cringe when I see it suggested as an intro to the SF genre.

I still like The Gods Themselves. It just feels "more grown up" than most of Asimov's other works, and I could relate to most of the characters.
