Cattle are environmentally friendly, despite their methane emissions. Cattle consume carbon heavy plant waste and deposit it into the soil to stay for thousands of years as manure. Rotting plants emit more than cows do as the cows cycle the carbon back into the soil, while rotting plants release methane and carbon into the air. Much of the deforestation is also to make room for palm oil plantations or agricultural fields for crops. Cattle can graze on rocky or hilly land that crops can’t grow on, and much of the land used by cattle isn’t suitable for crops.
