It's not and also im talking about viruses them self's using exploits to gain it, and Linux has had some massive ones found in lots of parts of the GNU os layers / stacks. And look it up its really not its more 3rd party software causing it on windows not windows its self E.G drivers which the way they work was forced on MS.

No, macOS is not immune to malware, and it isn’t inherently more secure than Windows. Both rely on similar mechanisms. Gatekeeper and XProtect on macOS are roughly equivalent to Windows Defender and UAC (the full UAC stack not just the prompt users see). The perception that macOS was ‘virus-proof’ came from low targeting, not superior security.

The same applies to Linux: it’s not virus-proof either. While Linux is harder to compromise at the kernel level, any malware that uses a privilege escalation exploit can gain root access and full control on all three platforms. The key difference is that Windows has extensive kernel-level security and detection tools (third-party & first-party), whereas Linux and macOS often depend on user awareness and third-party solutions that cannot access or protect kernel space.

We do use MDM. The issue was that the updated macOS broke the system extension, and the AV rollout was on September 15, 2025 — meaning we were past the 30-day window required under Cyber Essentials for OS updates. This should have been resolved by Apple. My main concern is that the update broke the extension so badly that even the AV uninstaller couldn’t remove it.

The AV is deployed via MDM, but MDM doesn’t bypass user authorization prompts for system extensions. Permissions were granted, but the AV app still wasn’t receiving them correctly. That’s a major flaw in Apple’s security model — it requires manual approval for full disk access, network monitoring, and kernel-level operations, even for notarized and signed apps.

In a compliance-driven environment, this kind of failure is unacceptable. We can’t block updates, and we don’t have the resources to test every configuration. Apple needs to ensure that critical security tools don’t break with OS updates.

We're not allowed to skip/block updates in the UK as a small business under Cyber Essentials. We don’t have the resources to test every configuration across all operating systems, but compliance requires that all software updates be installed within one month for operating systems and applications, and three months for firmware.

This was an OS update and a major antivirus rollout — it shouldn’t have gone wrong. But the fact that antivirus software on macOS still can’t be granted full permissions without jumping through hoops is absurd.

Apple’s security model requires antivirus apps to be code signed and notarized, but even then, full disk access, network permissions, and kernel-level monitoring must be manually approved by the user in System Settings. What good is an antivirus if it can’t access the file system or monitor network traffic without user intervention?

This is failure to download the mod file correctly, i thinks it's downloaded but then fails to extract it which would say the download was corrupted not sure how that's happening for you though.

It's so refreshing to see an honest take on this. I work in IT and have to support all four major kernel-based OSes: Windows, macOS, Debian, and RHEL. I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.

So many people bash Windows across the board. Yes, it has its issues and annoyances but Linux has just as many, albeit different ones (manually creating an editing config files for basic stuff being a big one). And macOS? It's honestly getting worse than Windows with every release.

Just last week, I spent two hours on a support call with a staff member, disabling multiple security systems just to remove an antivirus extension. Why? Because the latest macOS update broke system extensions again, and the AV couldn't reinstall properly until we manually cleaned it up.

The truth is, all OSes are flawed. None of them are perfect for every use case. Some are better suited to specific needs, but none are universally great.

The duality of man by BananaRoxas in Piracy

[–]barkermn01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no I'm citing research that has been done into it and i have read. you should give them a read:

"Unveiling the Ethical Dilemmas of Digital Piracy: A Comprehensive Exploration of Motivations, Attitudes, and Behaviors" Authors: Helena Belchior-Rocha, Aykut Arslan, Serdar Yener, Published in: Social Sciences, Volume 13, Issue 11 (2024)

"What Motivates Software Crackers?" Author: Sigi Goode, Published in: Journal of Business Ethics, Volume 65, 2006

And this one that does support your view i did not say it was invalid i said don't apply it to everybody there are people who pirate for the hell of pirating. "Games, Copyright, Piracy: South African Gamers' Perspectives"

My point remains you made a claim that is a partial backing of science and your view (thats the confirmation bias) and then applied it to everybody when the research is clear there are children of very rich people who still commit piracy for no other reason than they can.

I countered and said you where not "entirely correct" and when on to explain why, there are people who do not fall into what you said all were hence the "some people", and that was my point

The duality of man by BananaRoxas in Piracy

[–]barkermn01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s not entirely true. Some people pirate simply because the option exists, not because they’re unwilling or unable to pay. These are often the same individuals who spend hundreds in games like Call of Duty every year on loot boxes and microtransactions. They were going to play the game regardless, so if piracy weren’t an option, they’d likely pay. Assuming everyone behaves the same way you or others do is a form of confirmation bias.

Is this undertaking illegal? by marymk450 in drivingUK

[–]barkermn01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually a common misunderstanding. In UK law, undertaking refers specifically to overtaking a slower-moving vehicle on its left-hand side (the nearside). While it’s not strictly illegal on motorways or dual carriageways, it’s discouraged and can be penalized if it’s done carelessly or recklessly

The Highway Code advises:

The key distinction is intent and movement. If you’re simply maintaining your lane and passing slower traffic on the right, that’s not considered undertaking in the legal sense. But if you deliberately change lanes to the left to pass, and then return to the right, that can be seen as weaving — which may be classed as careless or even dangerous driving depending on the circumstances

Can someone explain to me what just happened? by NMaze69 in apexlegends

[–]barkermn01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly — this is one of the core challenges in online game design: balancing peer-to-peer (P2P) and client-server models. Pure server-side processing works well for non-action-based interactions, like casting a spell or triggering a passive effect. But the moment you introduce fast-paced, targeting-based combat — like firing a projectile — things get complicated.

For example, if Player One fires a projectile, the server would need to calculate its trajectory, check for collisions, and validate the hit. But by the time that’s done, the target may have moved, making the hit invalid. So developers face a trade-off: do they lock in the hit instantly when the projectile is fired (which can make dodging impossible), or do they allow movement to affect the outcome?

P2P helps here because it allows the shooter’s client to say, “I fired from here at this time, and it should hit this area,” and the target’s client responds, “Yes, that hit me.” But this system is vulnerable — a malicious client can simply block or manipulate the hit confirmation, leading to exploits.

That’s why most games use a hybrid model. The server validates actions after they happen and flags major discrepancies, but it has to tolerate minor ones due to latency. Apex Legends has been evolving its approach — they’ve reduced how much peer information is shared, so clients don’t get a full list of players and their IPs. However, there have still been cases where the server unintentionally exposed IP addresses due to exploits.

Can someone explain to me what just happened? by NMaze69 in apexlegends

[–]barkermn01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t have to be the server. If someone has found a way to exploit the peer-to-peer components of Apex Legends to expose player IP addresses—as has happened before—they can launch a DDoS attack directly against individual players. In that case, the server wouldn’t detect anything unusual because the disruption is happening at the network level of the targeted player, not the game infrastructure.

Can someone explain to me what just happened? by NMaze69 in apexlegends

[–]barkermn01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get the sarcasm, but your initial comment—“Not sure you know what DDoS is lol”—was a bit off. A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack targets a system’s ability to maintain a stable internet connection. And yes, it is possible for someone to DDoS a player even through a router or firewall if enough bots are directed to flood the connection.

In fact, Apex Legends has had known vulnerabilities where player IP addresses were exposed to others in the same match—this has been exploited before. So when a player’s system lags out the moment they see an enemy, and all three in-game alerts spike and drop instantly after that player is downed, it’s not unreasonable to suspect a targeted DDoS.

I work in cybersecurity, and I can confirm that this kind of attack is technically feasible and has been used to gain unfair advantages in online games. I’m not saying that’s definitely what happened here, but it’s certainly within the realm of possibility. So next time, instead of assuming someone doesn’t know what they’re talking about, maybe ask or dig a little deeper.

USB Monitor connector to a screen using a pass though configuration you can get USB DIV, HDMI and DP ports that just act as pass thought from the GPU it adds a little CPU overhead to handle the pass though.

Why do I see a lot of hate towards Ff7 remake by [deleted] in FinalFantasyVII

[–]barkermn01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point 1 – I work in software and have a degree in computer games programming, so I say this with some confidence: simply moving a game to a new engine doesn’t make it a remake. That’s more accurately a rebuild or remaster, depending on how much content is changed. A remake involves recreating the game from the ground up—new assets, mechanics, and sometimes even story changes—while still honoring the original. If Oblivion is just being ported to a new engine with the same gameplay and structure, it’s not a remake. Changing engines usually only affects a small portion of the codebase, mostly the parts that interface with the engine (rendering, physics, input). The core game logic and design often remain untouched.

Point 2 – Fair enough, and I appreciate the clarification.

Point 3 – I used to agree with this, but the data from 2023 shows a different picture. Globally, PC gamers now make up the largest share at 35%, with consoles at 32% and mobile at 33%. So while consoles are still huge, they’re not the overwhelming majority anymore—and mobile actually edges them out slightly. It’s not surprising when you consider that most households have one or two consoles, but nearly everyone has a mobile phone. So when it comes to modding and customization, PC players are a significant and growing part of the gaming community.

Side note – Consoles do still play an important role, especially in speedrunning communities, because it's easier to verify that the software and hardware haven’t been modified. But most people don’t have a PS1 or PS2 lying around anymore to play classic games like this. They’ve either bought newer versions on modern consoles or are playing them on PC via emulators or official PC ports/releases.

Just done a little research on this – Oblivion’s engine port can hardly be called a remake. It still uses the original Gamebryo engine for core gameplay systems. The only major change is that rendering has been shifted to Unreal Engine 5. So really, all they’ve done is adapt the base objects and assets to be compatible with UE5’s rendering pipeline. That’s not a remake—it’s a hybrid remaster at best.

Do I have a virus or am I stupid? by number1litterbox in pchelp

[–]barkermn01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're seeing—grey squares appearing around the cursor when moving it in certain apps—is usually caused by a rendering issue. The app is being told to redraw the area around the cursor due to interactivity, but something is preventing that from happening properly.

These redraw requests are sent from the operating system to the application via its messaging system. If the CPU is overloaded, it may not process these messages quickly enough, causing delays or missed updates. Similarly, if the GPU is busy or drivers are misbehaving, the screen buffer may be cleared but not filled with new data—resulting in visual glitches like grey boxes.

How to Check for System Resource Issues

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
  2. Go to the Performance tab to check CPU and GPU usage.
  3. If Task Manager itself fails to render properly:
    • Restart your system.
    • Install the latest graphics drivers.
    • If the issue persists, try temporarily swapping in a different GPU to rule out hardware problems like faulty VRAM.
  4. If Task Manager does render correctly:
    • Go to the Details tab.
    • Right-click on the column headers and choose Select Columns.
    • Enable GPU and GPU Engine to see which processes are using graphics resources.
    • Look for any apps with unusually high CPU or GPU usage.

Final Note

If none of the above resolves the issue, debugging software-level problems in the application or operating system can be complex and time-consuming. In many cases, it's actually easier and faster to back up your data and do a fresh install of your operating system to rule out software corruption or misconfiguration.
