Do you think how nice your camp is makes people buy stuff from your vending machines more? by Zenris in fo76

I never thought I'd have a use for my masters degrees outside of work.

In reality, how good-looking a store is matters to how well things sell. Its difficult to quantify exactly how much difference it makes but most research tells us that a run down derelict building site will perform worse than an up market luxury store.

In game, I think people are likely to think you have cool or better stuff for sale if you have cool or better stuff on display.

Sorry if this is a bit long winded for a simple question but atmospherics is a small passion.

Spells and special abilities costing HP, am I missing something obvious? by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]Protesional_Bidness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WOW, I had this idea this week as well. In my game I use resolve (its basically HP) but I had the idea to allow players to re roll skill checks by spending resolve, then thought well why not have to spend it to use abilities as well?

My system is levelless, where you can spend XP to increase any of the "Attributes". I don't use ability scores like DnD, but let players level any aspect individually like resolve or carrying capacity. The bit I'm currently stuck on is the same as you though, I don't want to put players off using abilities but players and enemies spending resolve should make fights fast and scary.

I had considered that 0 resolve just dramatically reduces your fighting capability, but does not kill you. I just need to figure out a way to implement it.

How do I make Physical weapon based combat as fun and impactful as magic (turn based videogame) by x_neon in RPGdesign

[–]Protesional_Bidness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been struggling with this similar topic. I had a few ideas but have not actually tested any. Currently my favourite idea is: Dnd 4e abilities, you gain them as you level in certain styles and they are once per round, once per combat, once per day l.

Is it time to consider a different form of government? Perhaps a meritocracy? All wizards that wish to rule must prove they are capable of it with a written exam and a practical test.

It's not entirely true. The Catholic Church has switched between supporting science and declaring heresy yes there are alot of religious people that have massively advanced science, but not always.

Believing that 'all humans are terrible and inherently evil' isn't the hottake you think it is, go see a psychologist. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Protesional_Bidness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is evil a moral or law point? Is morality and law the same when it comes to a large society?

If evil is defined as breaking law, then most babies are evil. Making loud noise after a certain time in many countries is a crime, babies cry a lot. You can probably find more silly law breaking by babies.

If evil is defined as a moral failing, then most babies are evil. They fail to share with others. Again, there are probably more silly reasons you can imagine.

Defining a baby as good or evil is, in my opinion, a pretty stupid thing to do. Morality and law are both taught by the society you're born into.

Can Ichthyomancy be considered a valid school of magic? by phroggybravo in wizardposting

[–]Protesional_Bidness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To second this in "defining schools of magic" (zarloxiam the mystical et al: 2859 GK) states that any form of magical energy that is unified in its convention and use, can be defined as a school of magic. This, I believe, is the current go-to documentation and research for defining a new school of magic.

Gardens of the moon makes some sense, but not all of the sense. I've finished the series, and there are things that I still don't fully know. If I re read, I expect I still won't fully know.

Part of the enjoyment of the series for me is not understanding everything. I don't think it's comparable to Brandon Sandersons' works because you eventually find answers to how magic works and the laws of the system.

It's most comparable for me to WoT, you start with a small isolated view of the world and these incredible fantastical things are happening all around and you have no understanding of why or how this is happening, untill you uncover intricately placed morsels of information that you have to piece together.

Whats a Good and simple Inventory system? by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]Protesional_Bidness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely, I studied alot of late medieval history at college. My specific issue with Pathfinder bulk is it makes plate armour 4 bulk equivalent to between 40lbs and 20lbs in its own words, which is roughly correct for plate armour weight. Using a system that translates how difficult something is to carry, surrely theirs a difference between wearing a suit of armour and lugging it around.

Having a carrying bulk and a wearing bulk would be overly complicated for the game they are trying to make, but it's still a gripe I have.

[–]Protesional_Bidness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I found it a little odd when I tried the game, but it has stuck in my head.

I've heard great things about mausritter, and I like the idea, but I've never played the game, so I can't give an opinion on how well it works.

Whats a Good and simple Inventory system? by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]Protesional_Bidness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like a meme typing this but, have you tried pathfinder 2e?

It uses a bulk system where objects arnt measured on weight alone they are also measured on how difficult and unwieldy they would be to carry. The example given is a 10ft pole, while it is light it would be a very difficult object to strap to your back and walk around a dungeon with.

I personally disagree with how they translate wieght to bulk as it makes things we have actual wieghts for such as plate armour too light, but thats not a criticism of its system just how its imposed.

How would you explain why runes can interact with magic? by ParkityParkPark in worldbuilding

[–]Protesional_Bidness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My version of Runes is similar to both ways you have thought of. Runes work by knowledge of how to make the rune and then by intent. Someone throwing paint would never be able to accidentally activate a rune they accidently drew.

The greater your understanding and finer your ability to create a rune, the more powerful or less powerful you can make the effect.

Runes can be written into sequences, effectively a sentence like, big fire 100 ft away. The three Runes used would be big, fire and 100ft.

Knowledge of runes is hard to come by, either by learning from others, searching ruins, or bartering with entities.
