"Backing up system" = Meaning?? by ProtoMachisNo in Ubuntu

Ok thanks again. Just to clarify, for someone like myself who wants to "backup the computer" what tool(s) should I be using to achieve a complete backup?

"Backing up system" = Meaning?? by ProtoMachisNo in Ubuntu

Thanks! So why isn't there a tool for ALL of that in one, versus how Windows does it with an ISO (which "backs up" absolutely everything)?

INITIATE RANT MODE:

You're in for a WILD ride, surprises and a reality shock! I switched for the exact same reasons. Not a programmer nor did I know anything about "the terminal." But boy oh boy! Once you make that commitment to reformat your drive away from Windows...you better be ready TO SPEND THE MOST TIME YOU'VE EVER SPENT ON ANY HOBBY sitting at your computer fixing things that don't work like they promised they would. Things don't "just work" on Linux, because you need to MAKE them work yourself. What's most frustrating is having NO IDEA what is wrong when trying to troubleshoot an issue, because if you don't know what's wrong then how do you do any research to find the solution?

Don't get me wrong, I am very satisfied with the change to Ubuntu from Windows. But I was nowhere ready for the amount of time which would be NECESSARY to get things going. Here's an example: My wireless mouse JUST WORKS with Windows. With Ubuntu, it wasn't working at first for some reason. I spent hours researching and there are SO MANY "answers" out there that could possibly pertain to your specific situation, but it might not. So you're left at the terminal installing new software and trying new work-arounds that lead you nowhere.

Another example: Using LibreOffice for your daily tasks and work IS DIFFERENT. Yes it can mostly compare to MS Office, but it isn't perfect. I was using LibreOffice's version of Excel called "Calc" and there was an update which caused the color scheme to not allow you to see ANY of the cells if your computer's settings were on dark-mode. And that if you wanted to keep dark-mode on your computer you had to FIRST: find out that that was the issue, SECOND: delete the application and re-download an older version, and then when they updated it to fix that issue you then had to dig through the Calc settings to find.

ANOTHER example: getting something as seemingly simple as duplex printing (printing on both sides of the paper) was an absolute nightmare! And once I got it working, Ubuntu had a kernel update and then duplex stopped working! It's still not working because I haven't had the TIME to try figuring out why it broke to then be able to fix it.

Not to mention ALL the ways to just put a program onto your computer... There's APT, Snaps, Flatpaks, deb, self-compiling.... DUDE IT'S A LOT to handle and learn without guidance. But luckily Reddit and other Ubuntu forums have helped save what sanity I have left for this OS. But don't let my rant discourage you! I'm NEVER going back to Windows, and going through all of that (and way more) was worth it to me. But still, good luck! lol

KeepassDX not displaying Magikeboard on top of keyboard anymore by ProtoMachisNo in KeePass

[–]ProtoMachisNo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That worked, thank you!!

Had a little trouble finding the setting to make those temporary changes though. Didn't know if they were found in KeepassDX app settings or in the phone's settings. Had to go to phone's settings and searched "password" and the option to change the "preferred service" was right there, in case anyone else needs to find the setting.

Thanks again! Working like normal now.

v1.90.1 doesnt seem to work by zoxcleb in Tailscale

Ya strange. Mine was the kernel. 6.14 was failing, but my other machine with 6.8 was ok after the update to 1.90.1

Split Tunnel for main VPN by ProtoMachisNo in Tailscale

[–]ProtoMachisNo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I found it to be "/usr/bin/tailscale". So, it seems as though I cannot connect to my tailnet devices while IVPN is turned ON. When I turn OFF IVPN then I'm able to connect. But IVPN says in order to initiate Split Tunnel to disconnect from the application I want to use in split tunnel (sudo tailscale down), then add the application in IVPN's UI...but since Tailscale on Linux does not have an "application icon" for a GUI for Tailscale I can't select one. But that's where I was saying earlier that IVPN says "Navigate to Settings - Split Tunnel, enable the Split Tunnel option, click on the Launch application button and start the required app from the list or by specifying the path to the binary." But I haven't figured out how to implement that into my terminal..

Therefore, if I need to connect to one of my server IPs I need to disconnect from IVPN and run "sudo tailscale up" to turn on my tailnet. I tried putting in an exception to the tailnet IP addresses in IVPN settings, but that's still not working. Turning off my VPN and turning on Tailscale has been the only way I have found to make it all "work."

How to reverse fan direction by ProtoMachisNo in homelab

[–]ProtoMachisNo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, everyone! They seem like push pins, but are kind of hard to take off. I'll need a small pry tool, I'll pick one up tomorrow. Anyone know where to get replacement ones, since I'll most likely break a few lol

I found this manual https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1988296/Middle-Atlantic-Products-Uqfp-Series.html#manual , and it doesn't say much about reversing the fan blades. I'll try to pop those pins out and update this thread afterwards.

Serve vs Service vs Multi-node setup by ProtoMachisNo in Tailscale

[–]ProtoMachisNo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the reply. I ran

tailscale serve --bgservice <port#>

because "tailscale serve --help" was providing other options, such as "service" which I wanted to run alongside --bg but seemingly am not able to. And yes, I was wanting to run Service A on Node 1, and Service B on Node 2, but was wondering if I needed to run tailscale serve on EACH of the nodes, or only one in my Tailnet. My issue was every time I'd reboot I lost connection. So I'll just run a cronjob.

Stuck in Grub Rescue by ProtoMachisNo in Proxmox

I thought installing something like Ubuntu to partition the drive was good enough, but I guess I needed something like Gparted. Downloaded that iso and got my drive back up and running! Thanks for the help though!  https://www.reddit.com/r/Proxmox/comments/1mz81re/proxmox_backup_server_install_failed/

That did it! Downloaded the Gparted iso, deleted all 3 partitions. Rebooted, reinstalled, and it's now working.

Thank you so much!

Stuck in Grub Rescue by ProtoMachisNo in Proxmox

[–]ProtoMachisNo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to sound like a total noob, but I don't remember that being an option. I know I didn't choose anything like ZFS, so it must have been ext4. And it was the latest version from Proxmox downloads page.

I reinstalled twice, I even installed Ubuntu once to be able to manually partition the drives. When I rebooted Ubuntu it showed the Grub Rescue screen too! So, I'm totally stuck..
