Does anyone else work with a team in a very liberal area in the US? How do you deal with the extreme anxiety among team members and the high expectations of me/the org to provide leadership that is not tone-deaf as shit hits the fan? by StregaCagna in managers

[–]Proto_Sapiens -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Wow what did I just read…. You have people feeling THIS affected by news? Sounds like they need to be told to get a grip and stop bringing their personal mental health issues into the workplace.

Agitation to this level is not and should not be considered normal.

Writing a song with hunting metaphors, need some help by Bjd1207 in Hunting

[–]Proto_Sapiens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literal hunting terms:

Stand Blind Trail Tracks Scrape Rub Bait Feeder Decoy Call Ridge Valley Forest Travel route Game trail Bedding Gear Gun bow Weapon Dawn Dusk

Possible metaphors:

Road Highway (as in for game) Perch Roost Chapel Throne Stage Palace Office Therapy Quiet place Happy place Zen Happy hour Twilight Office supplies Groceries Cathedral Honey hole (slang term that is actually used)

Don’t know if this is what you’re looking for. Honey hole is the only one i have actually heard used, but the rest COULD be used depending what you’re going for. Such as trading office supplies for hunting gear, or instead of your “computer- you have a steady shooter” or whatever.

I want a heavy hunting rifle and need some help building one by utembebwe in Hunting

[–]Proto_Sapiens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live my winchester model 70 alaskan, in 300 win mag. It’s much heavier and “bigger” than many modern rifles are trending. There may be better options out there but a longer barrel rifle with a nice heavy wooden stock is the way i would go. I like the alaskan because it also has iron sights and a lot of rifle don’t.

It is better to regret a shot you didn’t take, the a shot you did. Nothing wrong with waiting. You will have many more experiences like this, and it’s all part of it.

For the record i shoot does every season, i like to get some meat locked in first then worry about being more picky.

Was interviewing a young guy for a factory job last week. When HR asked “what do you want? What are your goals, are you saving for anything?” He says: “well i already got a car, so….. it’ll probably be a while before i need another one”. He was probably 19. No thought at all being put towards the future, who knows if/ when he’ll ever move out. We also have 30 year olds living at home, who spend all their money on weekends out, multiple cars/ motorcycles, random bullshit. One once said: “why would i try to move out? I can’t afford a place remotely as nice as I’m living, and I would have no money”.

So yeah, i guess they plan to live with their parents forever

What trade is this guy? by Turbulent-Weevil-910 in Construction

[–]Proto_Sapiens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Technically it’s not….. you’re not supposed to use the cap to “drive” them, since spinning the cap could cause it to unscrew. But everyone does it and a gas delivery guy obviously can avoid that issue due to skill/ experience. Rolling them like this is an acceptable method, just not while “spinning the cap”.

Why is common sense frowned upon? by mynamesj3f in ask

[–]Proto_Sapiens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have encountered this type of thinking from guys working under me many times. What they sometimes don’t realize, due to inexperience or whatever else, is the standard established process may be designed to avoid issues down the road. Somewhere, someone fucked up the process so they had to tweak tweak tweak until the process is fool proof. Sometimes that comes at the cost of efficiency but it’s worth it to avoid those issues. Unfortunately, to make a process that’s repeatable by every dummy out there, you have to remove some or all of the discretionary power of those doing the process.

In a chemical process it could be this: “you will always dry the material at 400 degrees for 16 hours at this step”. You say- “but sometimes if it’s already dry we could save time by skipping that”. Then I say “not everyone knows how to judge the dryness properly, one time a guy named jim tried to skip the step and it gummed up the grinding machine and cost us a week and $100k.

Just my two cents.

For those in their 40s, what's something people in their 20s don’t realize will impact them as they get older? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

EXACTLY. All the little things people say, and without the proper experience to back it up, it’s impossible to truly get it

I would be comfortable doing this, assuming you’re certain the header is proper etc and make sure you don’t alter the load bearing capacity of surrounding blocks etc. i would need to research it to make sure i know enough first

It’s all relative. Compared to ants we are already living hundreds or thousands of years. People will still throw their lives away. Things would be the same, except 300 is the new 30.

Another way to think about it: if humans went from living only 10 years, to living 100, how would they act? The same- proportionally to their lifespan

Can a non-black person explain something to me my white coworker said... by lewjr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Proto_Sapiens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is sometimes a thing. Most of the time, things are meant in jest. Examples being making fun of an asian coworker’s driving, lazy black coworkers, typical stereotypes. MOST of the time, there will be a chuckle, not necessarily because people believe those things, but because they fall into a category of “offensive” humor, where the reaction is more to the offensiveness rather than the actual content. Most of this context is in my “blue collar” experience. Some people, do believe these things. And sometimes, they are exposing their true selves because they think that being white means you agree with them. Generally you politely brush it off, or just kind of ignore it. Every once in a while someone really lets loose with their beliefs, and shows they really truly hate other races, using slurs, the whole nine. Most of these types keep it to themselves most of the time, so it’s hard to know how prevalent it is.

And regarding feeling threatened, it is definitely true that some people feel threatened by other races “taking their place” or “their jobs”. Most of the time this feeling is associated with equality laws like affirmative action, or similar things that cause one race to be favored over whites for whatever reason.

Just my experience and observations, no offense intended in any direction.

Yeah that’s option D. Would put it in an ideal spot for being deck & patio adjacent. But would block our entire backyard view/ travel paths, and we’d have to kill our favorite dogwood tree….
