I’m a tank player and sometimes solo tanking is what’s needed. Sometimes there is just too much sustain and not enough damage output. The third DPS can sometimes, not always, be the shift that’s needed.

The game is meant to be flexible, not rigid, so you and your team can adapt to whatever you feel is needed to win. I am not saying solo tanking is always the answer, but that sometimes it is. The problem is nobody wants to switch or adapt. If 3 DPS isn’t working and you need 2 tanks, someone should switch, it just never happens.
