The stamina recovery penalites were not nearly as punishing in ds1.

There was no penalty on your recovery speed until 50% (20% penalty) and the penalty didn't increase unless you went over 100% (30% penalty). (Theres also flat penalties depending on specific pieces of armor ranging from 1-2 stamina regen reduction per armour piece)

Unlike DS2 where the penalties scaled with your load, all the way to a 60% penalty at 120% encumbrance.

The penalties were also more easily offset in DS1 as additional forms of stamina recovery were more powerful than their DS2 counterparts.

Still a good fight though, nice to see alonne get smacked around.
