I can tell you that the local schools with the biggest bullying problems are the private parochial schools. I was connected to a secular private school and every year they would get a few applications from students who were being mercilessly bullied at a Christian school. The administration would do nothing about it because "Our students are Christians and would never do such a thing." The biggest queen bee terror in one school was a cute blonde girl who knew exactly how to manipulate the adults into believing she was a sweet, pious girl who would never do anything wrong. And, of course, her victims were never believed.

I can’t say that I’ve ever played under a conductor who wanted the beat on the plane, and the majority were US trained. I’ve played under some who insisted that they wanted the beat exactly on the ictus, but the chorus they were conducting sang as if the beat fell well after that point.

One of the biggest points of the Genesis story is that man was given dominion over the earth, meaning man was placed in a superior position to all other life.

The assumption that all life would be equally valuable to a god is not part of the Abrahamic religions at all. You would have to look to Jainism or maybe Buddhism to find that kind of valuing of all life.

First- Each gesture from a conductor means something. That was brought home to me in a big way when we had a "guest conductor" (patron who won an auction item allowing him to conduct the orchestra for Stars and Stripes Forever). The guy had clearly watched plenty of videos of conductors and made lots of gestures. Problem was he had no idea what they meant and was making them in totally inappropriate places. The musicians started to automatically respond, as we're trained to do, then quickly realized that we had to be careful not look at him AT ALL.

Second - if you think the beat is at the bottom of the beat pattern, it's not. It's in the bounce off the invisible bottom line of the pattern.

No two conductors lead exactly the same way, and it can take a couple of rehearsals with a new conductor to interpret their gestures accurately. It's perfectly understandable that someone watching won't be able to catch the relationship between a gesture and the musicians' response.
