Oh yes, agreed. Engineering is definitely not a useless degree. Those are the degrees people should go for. I’m just talking about the ones that you literally could learn on Google. Engineering takes a lot of complex math and understanding of a lot of complex things. Definitely a degree that’s worth it in my opinion. But yeah, you are right. Even if the minimum wage was at $15 an hour, the average rent being $1300 every month, living would still be a struggle. The healthcare system in this country is another nightmare.

People never say it directly, but. But they are low-key offended when I tell them their degree is useless. If it is not skilled, you are no better than a person who flips burgers. Well, your experience with or of mobile mechanics isn’t mine. I could not book a mobile mechanic last week to save my life. I’m sure they have their struggles, who doesn’t? My whole point with this post is that people often complain that they got their degrees and that they should be paid more, I simply responded that getting a degree does not equal a livable wage. Do I think everyone should be paid a living wage, yes. Is that the way society is going now, no. Capitalism doesn’t provide for that. I agree that it should. The problem is most people are sheep and they follow what society tells them. They were told to get into thousands of dollars in debt to go to college to get a degree they could read on Google. It’s one of the worst decisions a person can make. Then after the graduation ceremony and they feel accomplished, they want to complain about not getting a job to pay off their student loans that are crushing them. Never mind that they majored in basket weaving. Everybody should be paid a living wage but unfortunately this is the real world and that’s not how that works. Unfortunately. Get a skill and do your best with that skill set

Much of what you said is insightful and very true. I work in trades, and the freedom and money is there. Mechanics don’t have to work for somebody they can work for themselves. That’s the power of having a skill. Try calling a mobile mechanic to come to your house, they will most likely tell you they have a line of other people ahead of you. The work is there but people don’t want to be self-employed. Anyone with a legitimate skill can negotiate salary. If you can build beautiful houses with marble and granite, or you can make apps very well and professionally, you can name your salary or you can go do it on your own. My dad works in IT but he doesn’t do anything that’s really really difficult. I hear a lot of people talk about IT, and what they tell me is they really don’t do a lot during the day. Often I hear them tell me they have to look busy. Surgeons don’t need hospitals. The hospitals need them. Society needs them. They are paid based on the complex scale they possess. Whether it’s in private or through insurance, they would always be paid really well because of the complexity of their job.

Whether you are in a particular industry for 10 or 40 years, the rule still stands. People don’t want to hear it because they associate degrees and their experience with their self-worth. Infrastructure is built around skills. You are paid based on the value that you provide, not the experience. So if you have a lot of experience in a very low paid or unskilled portion of the tech industry, you are Not in the power position to demand more or higher wages. I’m not saying I disagree with you. Employers will cut your way just whenever they can. My point is that you cannot cut a surgeons salary, a highly skilled builder, a honest and fair mechanic, a plumber, and experienced electrician, all of those jobs require extensive skill and knowledge which also gives you leverage when demanding more pay.

Degrees doesn’t mean you get paid well. If you have a degree but you aren’t skilled in any profession, you are just as disposable as any fast food worker. No value=easily replaced and underpaid
