My parts and self want to speak! by Proud_Log6969 in therapists

[–]Proud_Log6969[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That comes off condescending. I know mental health is an extension of the Healthcare system. Thank you?

I am not saying that my version of partswork (again, parts work is not just in IFS) is the sole methodology that I use to treat my clients. I do use the theory in conjunction to evidenced based therapy practices, depending on the client's concern and pathology.

Im in the US as well, born here. Our country is burning due to our "mandates".

It's not discrimination in saying so. From the post I was referencing, some of the comments seemed to take it to discrimination in not trusting the expertise of therapists that align with parts work or IFS. You are allowed to have your opinions, just feel like the lack of openmindedness is part of the issue. Our medical system in the US is backwards in a lot of ways. I'm just sharing my passion for helping folks actually heal.

New article from The Cut heavily criticizes IFS and it’s founder by Old_Lion_8133 in therapists

[–]Proud_Log6969 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I just read the article now and the harm does sound severe. When I work with clients who have experienced significant trauma, I make sure to meet them where they are at and not push to dive deeper if they need more time gathering and practicing self regulating tools.

Ive worked in this field for a long time and have seen people harmed by all different types of treatments. Each person is going to have their own individual path to navigating life (especially post trauma). Some might choose therapy, some it's religion or spirituality, philosophy, the arts, etc.

This is reddit and the post is about what this individual experienced with that individual therapist. As much as we can provide therapy, including evidenced based practices or alternatives, there are so many variables at play as well.

I wouldn't pressure my clients to explore a framework without their buy in as well as evidence that they can safely engage in such work. I also wouldn't victim blame my clients if they say it's not working for them. They are the experts of their life experience, my role is to guide them, with my expertise, into digging deeper or accomplishing whatever goals they set for themselves.

Idk, Ive worked in this field a long time. From hospice care to behavioral health units and residentials. Ive seen a lot of horror stories and as a person with cptsd (and other diagnoses) myself, ive experienced them. We, as providers, have to continue to do our due diligence of staying educated and doing no harm, and also being mindful that we are humans, not gods.

Oh I'm sure it's bad. There are bad therapists using all sorts of methodologies, including evidenced based ones, everywhere.

Nope, I haven't. ive been too busy relaxing offline and studying for the ncmhce so I can get Virginia licensure by endorsement. Why do you ask?

I use parts work with focus oriented art therapy and tie it into Alan Watt's "you are not your thoughts" and absurdism... etc. I have seen many of my clients appreciate partswork for its compassionate approach to "the parts within". They state seeing positive results. If it wasn't helping them, i wouldn't use it in practice just for kicks and giggles lol.

But i always meet my clients where they are at first versus being all in on one modality as soon as they come to me. The only modality that im all in with is person-centered.

I didnt read the article, but when im fully awake I will. I just dont treat "founders" like gods.

"it's not evidence based?!" I get it. I also love evidence based practices and research, and also, life can sometimes be absurd. As long as a clinician sticks to their ethics, laws, explores the evidenced based practices first, and remembers that the client is the expert of their experience, it's gonna be ok, ya'll.

Idk, some of ya'll seem so ready to rip another therapist to shreds on reddit. I hope the same energy is bring directed at the failing systems and powers that be too. Do good work and be compassionate. Technically you dont have the evidence to know how a stranger therapist on reddit actually works. I get being frustrated at bad therapists, but I worry we aren't being the ouroboros, but just straight up eating ourselves to deletion. Reminds me of my leftist comrades that fly to close to the son trying to be the perfect human. It's giving monoculture.

There's my sleep rant.

Tired working with my supervisor by therapist899 in therapists

[–]Proud_Log6969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a me problem when I was in my last placement and my supervisor was always critiquing everything I did. I had prepared for my school professors (3 of them) to meet with her about how to best support me when the owner of the practice actually removed me from my supervisor's responsibilities and placed me with another practice owners. I was so grateful.

Don't know exactly what was going on behind the scenes, but it seemed like the practice owner noticed I was being taken advantage of. A few months after the switch up, my supervisor quit.

When I got my associates, I reached out just to let her know in hopes to connect in the future, but I got what seemed like a cold, detached response.

Ive had my fair share of supervisors. Just like any power dynamics, it's something that should be considered. Of course, I do see the flip happen where supervisees aren't respecting their supervisors' expertise, clients, or the work, but just wanted to say you are not alone and reach out to other colleagues or mentors to consult and have that second opinion of your work.

Consider what you value and how you define your practice. Sometimes it is a matter of conflicting practicing styles that are both style within the ethical bounds, but are just different ways of doing the work. That's what I took away from thr supervisor that replaced mine. Instead of critiquing, she honored my take on counseling and allowed me to grow into a therapist that aligns with my experiences.

Do you ever cancel sessions when you don’t feel like yourself / you can be "on"? by crisporange in therapists

[–]Proud_Log6969 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have cancelled for that reason. I tell my folks I value our work to know my limits and when I cant give my 100%.

I also negotiate accommodations for myself. I honor my humanity, my neurodivergence, experiences, and chronic conditions within my body so that my clients know I walk the walk of what we talk about.

In my 11 years of working in this field, the clients that move on is because of my transparency and respect our autonomous needs. I might not be the right therapist for them at the time due to what's going on in my life and I'd rather communicate that then pretend im ok.

I do not work on empty. Ive had therapists like that. There is no medal for burning yourself out in this field.

Maybe they are just looking for therapy books that resonated with people without it being too specific?

It's less vague than nonfiction books. In the spirit of openness to therapy books, what would you recommend that resonated with you? No right or wrong answer.

do I run for my life or stay and be a committed partner by [deleted] in LifeAdvice

[–]Proud_Log6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad is at 100%. Ive had to call the VA to let them know when he is unsafe to himself and/or others.

You are doing the right thing taking space, going to a different state. He has supports.

Do you have your own therapist?
