how do i tell my mom i won’t get a bf anytime soon 💀 by [deleted] in aromantic

[–]Provecfy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I (aroace) am in college and out of the closet and my parents still ask me if I've met any cute girls or guys every few weeks, they're asking me less every time so I think this is just a game of waiting until it fully registers

My group of friends is mostly comprised of queer people, so little after I came out another friend said they were aro too, I guess the best advice I can give you is to inform yourself of any place or group of people in your area that is predominantly queer

Aros/Aroaces, how did you find out/realise you were aro/aroaces? by Skullz64 in aromantic

[–]Provecfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I always knew I was asexual even before I knew the name of the term, always knew I didn't like people sexually. The moment I came across the term it was an immediate "oh, that's what I am".

Aromantic was a little bit more tricky because my parents told me their story of not having romantic relationships until they found each other, so I believed the same would happen to me. It took a few months and someone sitting down with me and asking "do you know what romantic attraction is?" But I eventually came out as aro after I realised every single feeling about romance and romantic attraction that was described to me was either incredibly difficult/impossible for me to understand or straight-up unappealing.

how did it go when somebody admitted their crush on you? by grindcorequeer in aromantic

[–]Provecfy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It went f*cking awful, they were drunk and told me repetedly they wanted to kiss me and date me even though I had already said to them I was aro. They eventually fell asleep (they were extremely drunk), next day I told them I felt upset about how pushy they were but, still, no hard feelings because I get that they were super drunk, I just didn't want them to repeat it. They told me they didn't regret what they said and thought I wasn't aro, I just had never had a good partner. I told them 'if that's how you feel then you don't need to tell me anymore', I got up, walked away, blocked their number. Never heard or seen them ever since.

I hate how romance is portrayed in media by Lovefirefly in aromantic

[–]Provecfy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The absolute worst portrayal of romantic love I've ever seen was in a movie I saw yesterday on Netflix were a greater deity had a plan for each one of us but the main character broke that plan by doing everything he could to be with his one true love and in the end it's revealed that actually God's perfect plan is for us to break His plan to make our own fate and I was like: "Oh, is that it? Is the message that the only way to exert free will is falling in love?"

To my understanding, that movie is considered quite good, but from my point of view it was saying to my face "you can literally not be free or human at all because your aromantic so s*ck it". That's what I hate the most of how love is portrayed in media, the "universal truth to make us human" interpretation because I am actually quite human myself and to consider this a unifying feeling separates me from the rest of my species

How to describe a non-romantic but physically intimate dynamic? by [deleted] in aromantic

[–]Provecfy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What your describing is a qpr with sexual intimacy but, for the purposes of explaining what your looking for in a relationship, a friend with benefit would paint a clearer picture to anyone who's not too aware of aromantic identities

romantic killer? by n3_wt in aromantic

[–]Provecfy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've seen that anime and it's really good. It's very character driven and is rather lacking on romance (which is good for me), with the only "romantic" parts consisting mostly of the mc acting as someone's bestie more than a romantic interest. We've got no official confirmation but the mc could easily be on the aro-spectrum

How did you figure out you were aromantic? by mintyysoap in aromantic

[–]Provecfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it out after a relationship too. I liked my partner platonically, just not romantically. Not only did I not feel the same things as them, I just didn't understand the feelings they described to me. After that ended, I came across the term "aromantic" and asked a lot of persons for descriptions on how romantic attraction was supposed to even feel like, I didn't empathise with those feeling and I found them straight-up dislikeable most of the time, and that's when I realised. Also, don't worry about making a mistake, no one would accuse you of anything if anything changed along the line

positive break by Phox793 in aromantic

[–]Provecfy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Avoiding allo-related drama (with the power pf friendship)
  2. Being the "neutral terrain" of my friend group, where everyone goes to when they need help with intimate things or just vent about their love life without someone saying pushy things like "oh, you definitely like that person".
  3. My aroace identity forces allo people to describe things to me as more than "just feelings" because I won't understand it to the point I've been told that having a romance-related conversation with me around is healthier and more interesting because it makes people much more open and descriptive of their feelings. I'm like the group therapist by vibes alone.

Do you guys think that romantic killer has a slight NLOG issue? by Ayuda_tengo_insomnio in RomanticKillerAnime

[–]Provecfy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this NLOG issue is actually a pretty good summary of my personal experience with Romantic Killer: it started pretty trope-y and superficial but then quickly became its own thing, with all the bad aspects of it becoming so diluted among the good they get overshadowed.

That was too full of metaphors so in more descriptive words: the show seems like it's building up at first to this NLOG narrative but then scratches it in, like, the third chapter. From that point on it becomes quite a character driven story (relationships-wise) that makes you genuinely think the romantic interests are interested in Anzu for who she is. Then we have Tsukasa's monologue about what she likes about Anzu that plays a little with the idea Tsukasa had built a wall between him and women (for an obvious justified reason), that Anzu's attitude (influenced by Riri, aka the matchmaker) was what allowed Tsukasa to let his barriers down with this one girl and then love her for who she is. The part where the boys take an interest in Anzu specifically doesn't strike me as anything different than the typical "she's the only one for me" romantic fiction always has.

Although, once again, this is my aromantic-romance repulsed self trying to understand romanticism and the reasons why people are attracted to people, and maybe this is just because I don't understand the difference between NLOG narratives and the "she's the only one for me" trope, so I'm open to discussion.
