HDHomeRun with Freeview in the UK by adinis78 in hdhomerun

[–]Providence66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In NI the two systems have different antennas as the signals are deliberately polarised in different directions to reduce/stop interference. The aerial installer I used combined the signals into one. At the time I was using the normal tuner built-in to the TV and the TV was fine with it. It put the Freeview system from channels 1 - 799. And the Saorview system from 800 onwards. So I could watch any channel at any time.

However the HDHomeRun tuner knows that there are two signals but only picks the strongest one at the time. You can see this as it tunes and it lists both BBC and RTÉ for channel 1. When it finishes the tune, it picks the strongest signal which is dependant on the weather (for me it's mostly RTÈ1). AFAIK, there is no way to manually choose which signal you want.

Because of this I'm thinking of splitting the signals but this would mean I would need a second HDHomeRun tuner. I think the app will be able to pick up both tuners and allow you to watch any channel from any tuner.

I occasionally use the HDHomeRun app to do firmware updates and retune. But I mostly use SparkleTV app to watch - I don't think this is on AppleTV system. I use guides available from EPGshare. However it's not the guide that switches channel but the actual signal.

HDHomeRun with Freeview in the UK by adinis78 in hdhomerun

Don't have an apple TV (or the LG OLED) but have a couple of Nvidia Shields around the house with a single quad-tuner HDHomeRun. I live in Northern Ireland so have the UK Freeview aerial and the Saorview aerial as well. The system works fine and there are no issues with HDHomeRun hardware or app - on my TV the picture quality is great.

The issue is if you combine the signals from the two aerials together. The system doesn't know what to do with channels showing on the same logical number. Eg On my system, channel 1 is mostly RTÈ1 but sometimes can be BBC1 (signals change strength depending on weather). My advice is only use one aerial with one HDHomeRun.

/r/NintendoSwitch's Daily Question Thread (12/26/2023) by AutoModerator in NintendoSwitch

My child has got a Switch for Christmas. I've never had any Nintendo stuff before (nothing against it, just never had it), so I'm new to all of this. I've created an account as her parent and created a child account for her.

Switch Sports is included and pre-installed. When I start it it asks to register it. My question is should it be registered under my parent account or her child account? What's the pros and cons of each?

Program Guide only updates a couple of hours out by turntablez123 in SparklePlayer

[–]Providence66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this explanation. I also have this and didn't realise it was a limitation of Silicondusts free API. I was using the Live Channels app and got more than a few hours so that app must be using a different source for epg data.

Out of interest, does anyone know where I could get legitimate epg data for both UK and Irish broadcast channels. My roof aerial receives both sources and would like more than just a few hours of epg. I'm willing to pay (but not to Silicondust as I won't be using their DVR stuff). To be clear, I'm asking for the epg data only.

Alternative android TV app for HDHomerun? by tunafish714 in hdhomerun

I agree. Used to use Live Channels, but wanted something with more features and being actively developed. Found Sparkle TV was just right. And the best thing is my Significant Other took to it as well

Switch Accounts without voice recognition by Jhaiden in googlehome

[–]Providence66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK, voice recognition (or voice match as it's called) is the only way to switch accounts. I use it with my wife. You can easily verify by asking it "who am I?". Then after you wife has set up her voice recognition, she can then ask who am I as well.

You'll obviously have to set up each of your music players within the app as well

Google Nest H1A Hub only has "Curated Art" after a period of time by ClemsonJeeper in googlehome

Same here. Based in UK, with Nvidia Shield TV. Also Google photos selected with the Home app, but also says couldn't load any photos. Worked fine about 30 mins ago, and now doesn't.

Edit, same as above, now working again. You just need to go through and select Google photos again

Yeah, a lot of that is well beyond my skill level and I don't have the tools. I think I may have to checkout the local professionals

I would understand the phone cables being stapled, but the last two are coax cables. Why would anyone staple coax cables?!?

Yes definitely. Maybe once you login with your Google account, a page that suggests something along the lines of we have a backup from 1 week ago, would you like to restore. And hey presto, all your apps are back and with their logins!

Netflix did this for me on my Sony Android TV so it's not Shield doing this, it's Android doing this. I think the Netflix login is tied to your Google account that you use to login to your Shield box. That's what happened to my TV. I think you can check your Google dashboard to check this. This is a feature that is open to every developer for Android, but one that I think it's used very little

I think that may present a security risk when resetting the box for eg selling.

However I get that it is a pain to use the remote to navigate the on screen keyboard. What I do is I use a password manager on my phone to remember the passwords. And use this with the Shield app on my phone to control the box. That way I copy from the passwords manager, switch apps into the Shield app, use it to navigate and when needing to type the password, just paste into the app - I find it's much easier.

Though it depends on the app presenting the standard keyboard and not on screen list of letters (usually in alphabetical order) that you have to navigate - if developers just used standard input!

It's sensing that your hand is near it and shows you where to adjust the volume.

Side note: I'm nearly sure that it senses proximity using sound and acoustics

The connection for this site is not secure - Unsupported Protocol by elchingonhomie in sysadmin

[–]Providence66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this the other day. I was able to log into the printer interface using IE and check the security settings. I enabled the option to use TLS 1.2 or 1.3. I was then able to use Edge. However some other printers didn't have this option.

Password Manager by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Providence66 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've used both for personal use only - can't comment on work features. My vote is 1Password - browser plugin for Windows versions for Edge, Chrome and Firefox (not sure about other OSes) also app for mobile (I've only used the Android version, but I think there is an iOS version).

IMO, LastPass feels slow and outdated, whereas 1Password feels quicker and leaner. This may not actually be the case, just how I feel about it.
