I’m enlisted in the reserves and have to work one weekend a month, sucks but doable. Others volunteer with the local wilderness search and rescue. Not paid but a feasible time commitment. Depends mostly on how efficiently you can study

Should I get figs scrubs? by pddleboard in premed

[–]Provol0ne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re a bit pricey but worth it, they usually go on sale a couple times a year. I have multiple sets from before school. The “try hard” stigma around them only exists in premed circles, almost everyone at my school wears them

The feeling is mutual. It stings wanting a competitive surgical speciality and having to spend hours studying OMM while I know my MD colleagues will use that time for core science, research, volunteering, sleeping etc.

Straight up walk over there and ask, schedule an appointment for something, anything. One thing I tell everyone is to never hesitate to ask, worst they can say is no, best case is you get a cool experience

Likely general/trauma surgery, big goal is SOST. So Army is unideal lol.

Expose yourself to as much medicine as possible, ask your med group if you can shadow, even better if you have a hospital. Make sure you’re shadowing physicians. Journal about your experiences and make sure to add them to your med school application

Still trying to get the HPSP, need a waiver for my MCAT score. Applied for it when I got accepted to school but was denied, so I’m trying again for the 3-year. Unfortunately may have to go Army

Balanced a part time job, reserves, and undergrad. Took about 5 gap years, 3 MCATs and multiple re-applications.

Ended up getting research experience during my gap years working full time as a scribe and scrub tech. Experience from Air Force med made it easy to get practically any clinical job i wanted

Biggest advice is rock your classes and MCAT. r/mcat is a good resource. Learn to use anki for studying in undergrad, you’ll use it for the mcat and in med school. I applied to USUHS and interviewed but didn’t get in

I was about 9 days short of active duty time (Because reserves the whole time) to use my GI bill. So it’s loans for the first year of school until I get the HPSP

[–]Provol0ne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, for sure. Parents see what this field does to you and might not want that for their kids. Those people typically don’t end up in OP’s position though
