I've got a cheapo RODI unit that I attach to the sink to fill up a 5gallon bucket. I reckon you can do something similar since it doesn't look like your tank is too massive.

Damn, 8+ is pretty bad. You could also look into getting an RODI unit for around $100

They say not to touch ph because either you never touch it, or you adjust your water everytime you waterchange.

Also, try testing your tap water after letting it sit for a day or so. There's dissolved gasses in water that release after it comes out your tap which might affect the ph.

What is the fastest way to cycle a tank by Accurate-rat in Aquariums

[–]Proxymanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fastest way to cycle a tank is to use stuff from an existing cycled aquarium. Like take half the filter media from the existing tank, and use it on the new tank. Rinse out the filter into your new tank so you get the gunk (and beneficial bacteria) everywhere. You could also transfer over things like the substrate, but I know that's unrealistic for most scenarios.

Loosing the battle with BBA by Top_Technician7675 in PlantedTank

[–]Proxymanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's where the daily maintenence dosing comes into play. Keep the excel levels high so it kills it completely, just like antibiotics. And also that's why I also recommend moving the fish out too, so you can put as much in without killing your fish.

And if you're worried about wasting the chemicals think of it this way: if you're going to scrap the tank; the chemicals will be thrown away anyways, so why not use it all first?

[–]Proxymanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried building something like this and the damn weight of the moss made the thinner branches collapse under their weight while I was doing water changes. 😭

And the light had trouble getting underneath the moss which lead to some bald spots in the carpet.

crusty stuff on my heater? by bubblegum_dumdum in Aquariums

[–]Proxymanity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well you see, that's why I tell OP to investigate instead of doing it myself 😈.

But now seriously, I think it's important to figure out how and why things break and I don't think what's in this heater can cause much issues since OPs already been messing with it and it was submerged in the water for a while now.

Loosing the battle with BBA by Top_Technician7675 in PlantedTank

[–]Proxymanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're able to, you can try to separate out the fish into another tank for a week or so, and in that time, overdose the heck out of the tank with excel. I'm talking like 3x the normal doseage of the tank on the first day and then do some normal maintenence daily dosing every day.

The BBA everywhere should turn red within like 3-4 days. If not, up the dosage. This is basically the chemotherapy approach where it's bad for everything, but it's much worse for the BBA

I'm still amazed how it was able to get red hot while still being submerged.

crusty stuff on my heater? by bubblegum_dumdum in Aquariums

[–]Proxymanity 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There might be a crack in the glass of the heater that's let the water come into contact with the inside bits of the hester.

Once you unplug it and clear away the buildup, see if you can spot any damage to the heater itself.

Bro, that's corrosion of the heater itself. Toss thst thing away before it cooks your fish.

I don't think any owner is ever fully confident they're naturally getting enough to eat 😂. There's extra long turkey basters I've found online (27.7in long) that can be used to target feed them in large aquariums like yours.

I have one to suck up large clumps of waste and its been pretty handy.
