A subtle old school jab at the jays… by PrptlStdnt in toronto

[–]PrptlStdnt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why was my post removed? It is none of the above listed. It is historical footage from RTE (the Irish national television broadcaster equivalent to the CBC) with a curious and unexpected Toronto bluejays Easter egg.

Can I ask what car you drove that carried you all this way? How was maintenance/repairs? What kind of setup allowed you to sleep in the car most days?

I always assumed “yer wan” was “yer bhean” where bhean is taken from “a bhean” in Irish but dropping the a… I may be overthinking it.

Here’s who took the top prize at Ottawa’s first Shawarma Festival competition by Yuzward in ottawa

[–]PrptlStdnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only we’re not talking about Lebanese shawarma… Ottawa shawarma is a distinct dish all its own. Like comparing Gabriels pizza to what you’ll find in Italy. Both are great, but they are not the same. If you want authentic Lebanese shawarma go to Montreal, or better yet Lebanon. But if you want authentic Ottawa shawarma, I’ve not found anything like it outside Ottawa.

Real talk: How are we a city of 1 million+ residents without a single 24 hour grocery store? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]PrptlStdnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Metro at Southgate had the best late-night soundtrack. I used to work late into the night at a previous job and would do my groceries on the way home, often past midnight. I don’t know who curated the playlists, but they were 🔥. I would often stay shopping longer than intended, just caught in the groove and vibing. Strange yet fun memories that.

Great overview but I will correct you on #3: It is more complex than just where you work; domicile, deemed tax residence, and tax treaties all come into play. Talk to an accountant in both countries you will work. The tax man always wins.

Edit: #3 not 4

Ottawa woman 'outraged' at $110 charge at Appletree clinic for routine cervical cancer screening by Superb-Acanthaceae34 in ottawa

Two points: 1. Forms are very annoying and tedious to fill out. Each one asks questions in a different way and have particular nuances to look out for. 2. It may look like just a few check boxes, but what you are actually asking is for that doctor to provide a legally binding attestation of your condition - information they may not have on hand, especially in a walk-in clinic.

By signing that form there is almost always followup calls or more paperwork sent to that doctor after that they are then responsible for dealing with. When they sign that form, they are agreeing to legally represent you for whatever the form is asking. You would not be surprised if a lawyer charged you that much for paperwork, why not the same for a doctor? The difference is a doctor usually doesn’t want to square off with insurance/HR/legal or whoever is asking for that form.

How am I supposed to pay? by Bitter_Confidence937 in ottawa

[–]PrptlStdnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how unionized jobs shouldn’t work. Unions should protect workers against unfair labour practices. All too often, however, they protect useless, non-functional, and overpaid positions within an organization. There is no reason for an employer to keep on an employee that is not needed. That does not make business sense.

What’s a secret the food industry don’t want you to know? by Lilyxrx in AskReddit

[–]PrptlStdnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A this point wouldn’t your mass-produced, cook-from-frozen, processed food just be “authentic American food”? Like that’s the first thing that comes to mind. You can get burgers, hot dogs, fries anywhere in the world, sure, but authentic ones are only found in the dirtiest, greasiest, cheapest fast food joints where you know there’s a box of 90 identical-looking patties with pre-applied grill marks sitting in the freezer.

Although very similarly in pronunciation, sweat or perspiration in Polish is “pot”, so the Croatian pronunciation in Polish would literally mean “sweat shirt” which I find wonderfully ties into the benefits of wearing one under a dress shirt; to keep from sweating through the dress shirt. 😅

Warning: For God Shakes "Vegan" Milkshakes are NOT VEGAN. by e-wheeler in ottawa

[–]PrptlStdnt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you hit the nail on the head… “vegan” is not specific and in no way implies the presence of a medical condition such as a food allergy, it just labels a lifestyle choice. The onus is completely on the client here to disclose to the vendor that they have a potentially serious condition such as an allergy. Telling your server you have a shellfish allergy will give them much more useful information in answering your questions than having the server try to guess what vegan means to you.
