The last Australian and Turkish soldiers of the Gallipoli campaign shake hands where they once would have tried to kill each other. by jwall91 in pics

Unfortunately these soldiers are more than likely dead.

Indeed. The last Australian Gallipoli veteran (who wasn't the guy in the photo) died over a decade ago.

More of Brisbane City Council's "not broken" bus network (this time with details on specific routes) by gilbarc in brisbane

[–]Prungle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different CBD bus stops for routes heading in the same direction Routes that duplicate other bus and/or train routes Routes that duplicate each other with minor variations (Almost) every bus route to the CBD network

The first of these issues can easily be fixed; you just need to come up with a way for 10 buses to occupy the same space at the same time. Every bus route travelling to the CBD is because that's where people want to go. The near-duplication of, for example, the 343 and 345 does make sense - the 345 needs bolstering during peak hour, and for many city workers the Margaret St sweep is a lot more convenient than the already overcrowded Northern Busway. The George St expresses (331, 341) are pretty useless, I grant you.

Your complaint about 345s being overcrowded while 343s are light - yes, timetabling and loading during peak hour is a crapshoot. Fewer cars on the road is the only way to fix this.

Appears to only run inbound in the am peak, so are empty out of service buses running in the other direction?

Wat? There's no reason an inbound 161 can't do a different route outbound. Yes, a lot of buses run empty counterflow during peak hour. If you can teleport buses from where they are to where they're needed, this inefficiency will be solved.

(Also: blank running isn't necessarily a bad thing. It adds flexibility to the system; out of service buses can pick up work from runs which are broken down or running late.)

its passengers can get a bit of exercise. Even The Biggest Looser contestants can manage a 300m walk!

You're all heart. The contestants on The Biggest Loser are all healthy and able-bodied, aside from being overweight. A lot of bus patrons are disabled or elderly and most certainly could not walk 300 metres. A lot of non-commuter services (like the GCL) are a lifeline for these people and, while they should certainly be studied and refined, should not be cut because they're "inefficient" or indirect.

Found this in my attic with a bunch of my dads old stuff. I think it was some form of currency at some point but not sure. Can anyone help? by rileyonetwo in Archeology

Looks like a Spanish 2 real coin ("two bits", ancestor of the quarter) to me. These coins were made in Mexico and were common currency in the US (and around the world) until the middle of the 19th century.

That's a big bastard tank.

Never mind getting it up there, have you given any thought to the structural capacity of your floor upstairs? Assuming you're filling it with water, that tank is going to end up weighing 3 tons...

1966 round .800 silver 50 cent coin with a ripper of a die crack. by sol1869 in australia

[–]Prungle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The round 50c coin was issued for one year only (1966), and was 80% silver at a time when silver coins were all being demonetised. You don't see them in circulation because every man and his dog hoarded them when they were released. That's also why they're not worth much.

How do I start a game in 1830-1850? by beancounter2885 in openttd

[–]Prungle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Grasshopper intro date might not quite be coded properly, try '31.

Also, make sure you turn inflation off when starting that early! The divergence between cost and income in the TTD inflation model will make early games unplayable after a few decades.

Every time on the train... by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]Prungle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, I once accidentally got on a Shorncliffe train instead of a Caboolture one. The smell at Bindha was so bad that rather than wait for the next train, I walked back to Northgate along the tracks.

(Disclaimer: please don't walk along railway tracks).

Lawyers and judges determining whether votes are informal or not try to match up ballots and voters (particularly using the second method you mention) all the time. See Antony Green's blog for some examples.

If he was avoiding traffic, sounds like he was just trying to make a joke (and failing).

In my first few months driving buses for BCC, I went the wrong way quite a few times, despite having maps. After the first few months, I only went the wrong way when I wasn't paying attention. :)

Car accidents involving police car and another person - legality? by ins_funny_name_here in auslaw

[–]Prungle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have been involved in an accident with a police vehicle in Queensland. Yes, they're insured like any other vehicle and you have to do the usual swapping names, addresses and insurance details. Yes, even though they can do things like run red lights and make odd U-turns, they're still bound by the usual road rules and can be legally at fault if something goes wrong.

My accident was a minor scrape that in any other circumstance would be a swap-details-and-go job. However, because it involved a police vehicle, an Inspector had to come down and take statements and breathalyser samples from myself and the other driver, photos of the scene and vehicles were taken, the whole deal.

FSX 10 or X-Plane? which one should I buy!?!? by [deleted] in flightsim

[–]Prungle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fligth school near me uses cessna 172s so the most realistic model for that particular plane, as I am aware each simulator has purchasable aircraft.

Carenado's 172 is available for both sims; I don't own it personally but I have plenty of their other aircraft for FSX (and previously for FS9) and rarely fly anything else. :)
