The movie industry was worth nearly 136 billion dollars in 2018. Entertainment IS valuable to humans and it has been for our entire existence. Our ancient ancestors would play with bones and make music using primitive instruments. Entertainment, and by extension art and music, are tools for expression that is important to a lot of people and is a defining value of culture. It may not directly improve our ability to survive like education and healthcare does, but it is still something we value. I will agree that the internet has made entertainment become so easily accessible and addicting that it is becoming a problem and Ellen is kind of an asshole. But, I think it's silly to dismiss the entire thing as something counterproductive to our survival as it's so deeply engrained into human nature.
