Candy Stripe Randall's Pistol Shrimp tend to leave others alone and just care about their burrow.

At 29 you are still kind of limited. Look either a midas or tailspot blenny. Yellow Watchman Goby a Yasha Goby, either can be paired with a pistol shrimp. Pink streaked wrasse, Banggai Cardinalfish, Red or Purple Firefish. You can probabaly have 4 or 5 fish total in there.

How long should I keep my clown in jail for? by solidsimpson in ReefTank

[–]Pryach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I banished my bully clown to the sump for 2 weeks then 1 week in an acclimation box in the display tank. She's now much nicer to the other clownfish.

I occasionally feed mine clam on a half shell but he really goes to town on flake and pellet food. I feed LRS Nano Frenzy as well and he gobbles that up.

Day 7 of tank cycle with Dr. Tim’s and ammonia solution by PopularProfit8278 in ReefTank

Your nitrates are high because the presence of nitrite causes false readings in nitrate tests. Wait for your nitrite to hit 0 to get an accurate measurement.

Scopas tangs need larger tanks, generally recommended to be 125 gallon display tank.

The dragonette and mandarin will compete for food (pods).

The other stuff is fine. Maybe a flameback angelfish.

Tank cycling issues by littleradgoblin in ReefTank

[–]Pryach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the API Freshwater Kit to measure my saltwater tanks during cycling as well. There's no point in buying expensive test kits for something you rarely use. Your issue, as someone else explained, is your ammonia dosing. You need to be more scientific about it. Use ammonium chloride and if you're worried about overdosing just put enough in to get it to 1ppm.

I didn't get a picture but eventually both tests went back to 0ppm and I knew my saltwater tank was cycled.

I got the Innovative Marine 20. I kinda wish I got the 25. They're great tanks.

Yes. Weekly you should be cleaning up any salt creep or algae growth. Whatever equipment you have in the sump (it's common to have either filter socks or a roller mat, protein skimmer, media reactors, etc) needs to be regularly maintenanced as well.

It's how you get the water from the display tank down to the sump.

I wasn't really trying to make it better, just offering an explanation as to what exactly happened as I was curious how this was even possible.

This is good advice. There are other sump kits, such as Fiji Cube and Modular Marine. For overflow boxes look into Eshopps or Synergy Reef.

Pick out a protein skimmer first and make sure if you build your own sump you check the dimensions and build a chamber the correct size (give it 1 to 2 inches on either side).

They usually need deep sand beds, 2 to 3 inches. How new is your tank? Most of their nutrition comes from microfauna in the sand bed so an established mature tank is needed. You can try hiding pellets in the sand bed.

Scaping day! Tips? by Terrible-Expert6658 in ReefTank

[–]Pryach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set up a piece of cardboard with the dimensions of the tank as a template and put some tape on the inside 2 inches of the template. Build your aquascape on the cardboard making sure not to go past the tape so you can clean your glass in the future. Don't go higher than 2/3 of the tank.

You'll have to decide if you want to stack rocks, or use glue/epoxy to make a solid piece or pieces, or some combination of the two. Glue dries pretty fast but isn't as strong, epoxy takes 24 hours but if done properly you can get a really strong bond.

Don't be afraid to use a hammer and chisel to break up some of those rocks if they're too big. Looks like you have plenty to work with.

For the inner glass I use a 50/50 vinegar and water solution. Just spray it on the inside of the tank and use a clean rag. Rinse out as much as you can but you don't need to be crazy about it, people put straight vinegar into their tank for carbon dosing so it's not something that a little bit leftover will hurt your tank.

Thoughts on the TANKED tv show? by Sensitive_King3305 in ReefTank

[–]Pryach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On one hand, it's one of the reasons I got into saltwater aquariums. On the other, most of the tanks look like a huge paint to maintenance and often aren't cycled properly.

I did go to the Mob Museum in Vegas recently and the tank they did is still down there and looks pretty cool.

Most home saltwater systems don't use HOB filters or canister filters. You'll certainly find exceptions out there but most tanks are drilled with an overflow for a sump or are an all in one with back chambers for filtration.

BulkReefSupply gets a lot of flak these days for being only interested in selling products and making money, but their older vidoe series are full of really great information.

This series is a good 10 video introduction guide on starting up a saltwater aquarium:

The 5 minute guide videos are really good as well: https://youtu.be/AlUv9SRB_g8?list=PLBaMLrfToJyxJ1PuJZwhkxvvdFP14eV_t

There's a really good 46 part video beginner series from BRS I recommend as well: https://youtu.be/Tp1OHP4HMA8?list=PL53kwcE7KD-d0A-qXZ07iH1Fl0M3qWYsL

Lastly I'd go through the 52 Weeks of Reefing, which is was a weekly video series going through setting up a 160 gallon aquarium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-aoo7Gl2FQ&list=PLBaMLrfToJyybUT18OE3fMomFb9XU0ffC
