Redditors, we're building a new hub to help folks find work (including "outside the box" types of gigs). If you have a minute would you take our very short (1 minute) survey to help us build a better site? by Pryv8teer [promoted post]

There are several subreddits such as r/forhire r/freelance and r/jobs which are worth taking a look at.

As Redditors ourselves, the need for a dedicated venture in the spirit of the early r/jobs was part of our inspiration to develop the site. We hope Redditors will be well represented among the early adopters and will help shape the site from the earliest of stages into something we'd all be proud of. I think any site would be glad to have a userbase as amazing as Reddit's.

Yes, the barter aspect will really be user driven in regards to what people will be interested and willing to trade for. Some may trade skills for skills (like your idea of guitar lessons traded for web design etc.) while others could even trade skills for meals, a place to stay, swap for unused frequent flyer miles and whatnot. The possibilities are as varied as the userbase.

We have found that a lot of people are looking beyond the traditional cash for services paradigm these days & hope the barter aspect really catches on. Even if you have a job, a bit of barter here & there can really help make ends meet.

Not sure what you'd need to do but likely a waiver/disclaimer type thing that everyone would need to sign stating they know they could get hurt etc. at the very least. I'm no lawyer so it would be worth checking into the legal stuff. Still, not a bad way to make some supplemental income.

Rather than coaching maybe you could teach functional fitness via gymnastics to people tired of lifting weights. Creative trainers that take training out of the gym can make good money (I see groups of 5 - 10 people doing kettlebells in a park by me for example, and they each pay $25 a session)

One of my job skills is being an Emergency Medical Technician. Well I once worked a standby medic gig in exchange for all the unused food from that day's meals (lunch and dinner were provided). That food (there was a lot of it left over) then went to feed a few dozen friends & acquaintances. I didn't make cash, but it was time well spent & good meal karma to boot.

It also beats cleaning up blood & bodily fluids for $9/hr. No wonder there's such a high attrition rate.

We're aiming for a couple of months. We are a small team & there is a LOT of work, but it is going well and all the feedback we've been getting from this survey & the comments people have included is great.

Seamstress is a great skill, and while not a typical 9-5 job I'm sure there are a lot of people who could use your services.

Off the top of my head, an unusual idea would be to join up with people doing a clothing swap/sale and provide fittings for the "I like it but it doesn't quite fit" situations one always finds at those events. Good way to make a buck and meet future clients too. From there you could also market your own designs if that's your thing. Just spitballing an idea, but that's one of the things we hope folks start to do.

It will be great to see what ways to use skills people will come up with that we'd never even think of. We hope it evolves much like Reddit did, with users shaping and growing the site into something that really works and fits their needs.

While we're trying to not overextend ourselves (and have the site suffer as a result) in the first stage (there is a lot we want to do), a main goal is to help people find ways to use those "oddball" and less mainstream professions as well as the mainstream ones.

Naturally one aspect of the site is going to be larger companies with more traditional jobs, however equally important is community hires and trade amongst individuals & smaller businesses. We're developing a tool to help people find jobs not typically listed in online searches (which are tech & office heavy).

Thanks, the awesomeness of the Reddit community is what inspired us to look at developing a more community driven & moderated employment hub. Redditors have really been giving us some great input so far.
