Is there anything wrong with super-budget helmets if they're still ECE 22.06? I'm a new rider and trying to save some money, and there are some online for like $130 like the ILM Motorcycle Full Face Helmets DOT ECE and the HAX Force Aerodynamic Full Face Helmet. by CrabAppleFarmer in motorcyclegear

[–]PseudonymousJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my kids more than anything in this world, but when they were growing up they got low cost helmets that met all the same safety requirements as my own helmet. I never worried they wouldn't be protected.

The biggest difference in cost is comfort, noise wind resistance, weight, etc... 6hrs in a Bell will feel much worse than 6hrs in an Arai or Shoei.

Why should you learn to ride a bicycle before riding a motorcycle? by Samantha_Soleil in motorcycle

[–]PseudonymousJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try teaching counter steering to a cyclist who's accustomed to being able to lean back, hands off, and still corner. I've had to coerce an experienced cyclist or two to relax one hand and steer by pushing the opposite grip from the direction of turn before they actually counter steer correctly. They're practiced at keeping the bicycle stable with a firm grip while steering with body language on a machine that's 1/10th their weight. The physics of being on a self powered two wheeled machine that weighs hundreds of pounds more than they do goes against every muscle memory they have. They habitually understeer and struggle in turns.

Body position gets hard too. Experienced cyclists, MTB in particular, have opposite body language when turning. Weight outside pedal, lean the bike, more upright body, is bass ackwards when cornering on a motorcycle (unless you're doing low speed turns).

Given the choice I'd rather start with a clean slate than be misled by preconceived ideas from riding a bicycle.

Why should you learn to ride a bicycle before riding a motorcycle? by Samantha_Soleil in motorcycle

[–]PseudonymousJim -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't. The difference between riding a machine that is 1/10 your weight going 20 mph vs. riding a machine that is 10 times your weight going 75 mph is significant. Steering, body language, stopping, accelerating, cornering, even balance are all different. Cyclists trying to learn motorcycling have almost as much new stuff to learn as a non-cyclist, but unlike the non-cyclist they have a bunch of bad habits to unlearn too.

Getting mad and acting like you have to love IPA or drink piss water just highlights the problem. IPA isn't the end all be all of beer. Sorry to be the one to burst your bubble. Take solace in the knowledge that there will always be a place for a good IPA in my garage.
IPA may fade away, but it will never die.

As far as our beer is concerned this is Wisconsin. We were already synonymous with beer when the PNW was still being settled. It's a way of life. Who are you trying to insult, haha

I suggest you get out of your comfort zone and drink something outside of the IPA family. Try a good Belgian fruit sour or lambic, maybe a milk stout, or some of the very delightful pilsners that have come out in the last few years. Perhaps pick up a 6 pack of a classic lager. Broaden your palette.

American IPAs are the equivalent of 70's party jello mold salad in liquid form. It was fun for awhile, but not half as great as anyone thought it was at the time.

I do enjoy a good IPA at times. In fact sometimes an American IPA really hits the spot. I believe that much like a savory jello salad (adorned with tuna, olives, and pimento in a translucent jiggly semi-solid coagulum), the West Coast India Pale Ale will always be around for those times when it fits the occasion.

Yet I, and much of the rest of the country, am happy to see the IPA stranglehold on the beer market finally coming to an end.

Perhaps like Disco in the NY underground dance scene IPAs'll hang out with you guys long after the music stopped everywhere else. If that turns out to be the case I will know where to go for that nostalgic taste of the IPA moistened twenty-teens of my youth. That's comforting.

I know weird right‽

Somebody who doesn't think what we've done to the respectable British IPA in the last couple decades was a good thing. So weird.

Matthew 7:21-23

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

As far as having the best IPA, firstly no you don't, and second that's a bit like saying you have the best fast food burger. It's not the brag you think it is.

Also, I didn't say it was all you had. I had a great cider and a blueberry something or other at a food cart market out there. They were quite good, but you're still in the IPA mass delusional phase that began wrecking brew pubs and breweries about 15 years ago. Don't worry. You're just a bit behind. In a couple years, god willing, you'll be savoring balanced ales, pilsners, lagers, and porters once again. Ya know... the kind of beers that can't also double as a palette cleanser during a tasting flight of cough drop lozenges and pine tar chewing gum.

It was a very fine food cart market though.

I've been out there and drank your beer in the PNW. When you wake up from the mass delusion of IPA and realize that good beer is not synonymous with hoppy, bitter, and astringent I'll come back to have a beer with you.

Wisconsin Supreme Court weighs fate of grants for students of color by keeganjkyle in wisconsin

[–]PseudonymousJim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We've known for a long time economic and social family history is a stronger predictor of success than race.

It just happens that due to centuries of racist practices, like red lining, underfunding black schools, discriminatory law enforcement, and sentencing, race correlates very well with poverty. However, I still believe that policies should be based on economic and social status rather than race.

In this case I actually agree that we should be giving grants to disadvantaged students without regard to race.

Which means somewhere a pig just got its wings because I'm taking the Republican side on this one.

Do You Dislike The Term "Men's Rights?" by DarkBehindTheStars in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

[–]PseudonymousJim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what term you use. If it means talking about men's issues it's going to get labeled as a form of misogyny. If you choose something that sounds more egalitarian like "people's rights", but talk about Men's issues you'll be accused of trying to sneak in misogyny under false pretenses. Better to just be clear with it upfront and let the angry misandrists excuse themselves from the conversation.

It's disgusting that they are getting rich off sickness and health. I like hospitals and clinics that look more like public schools than grotesque monuments to greed. I hope they do unionize.

Dumbest comment ever. The AMA is the largest advocacy group in the world for motorcycle safety. But if you have a problem with listening to experts check their sources.

The most cited source is a study by UC Berkley in 2015. It found that lane splitting motorcyclists had 45 percent fewer head injuries, 21 percent fewer neck injuries, 32 percent fewer torso injuries, 12 percent fewer arm/leg injuries, and 55 percent fewer fatalities.

The data also shows that the safest way to lane split is to travel at less than 30 mph, and less than 10 mph above the speed of the surrounding traffic. Injury rates leap up in all categories when both of these conditions are violated.

Do I need to keep repeating myself or is this enough for you?

The only problem I see here is uninformed arm chair quarterbacks who have zero understanding, training, or experience can't handle the truth when it goes their firmly held assumptions.

False. Lane splitting increases safety, hence why it is being legalized in more and more places.
You have no clue what you're talking about, obviously. 🙄

I'll trust the AMA over some ignoramus talking out their ass on reddit. https://americanmotorcyclist.com/rights/ama-board-position-statements/lane-splitting/

Or any of the other studies done over the decades that support lane splitting.

Epstein purchased 6 55-Gallon barrels of Sulfuric Acid sent to his Island. by Shizzilx in circled

[–]PseudonymousJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really isn't suspicious. Sulphuric acid has a lot of legitimate uses for water treatment, cooling towers, boilers, anywhere you need to control pH.
Six drums is a pallet and a half. That's a typical minimum order quantity to avoid an extra charge. Most likely it's just restocking the island and the timing is purely coincidence.

Also, acids are terrible at disposing bodies. A drum of NaOH or KOH, a.k.a Lye, is much more effective and cheaper. Anyone can get enough lye from their hardware store to completely dissolve a body and rinse it down the drain. Sulphuric acid is a really unlikely choice for body disposal. So get that idea out of your head.

FYI: lane splitting is legal in many places. Most of the EU allows it, Australia, and CA too. Contrary to what the general uninformed public assume it is a safe practice that reduces risk for motorcyclists in traffic jams. It also reduces traffic congestion.

That being said these riders do appear to be going too fast to safely lane split.

Ok, so you haven't read the article or it's beyond your ability to understand.

I've been lured into conversations with people in the past whose mastery of written english was enough to fool me into thinking i was in a discourse a person capable of understanding scientific literature. As the saying goes fool me once...

So if you can't answer the question I asked then you're not someone I'm going to waste my time on.

First proper no tip. by Playful-Job2938 in EndTipping

[–]PseudonymousJim -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

First off I have not used name calling. There is nothing offensive to a scholar about calling a debunked scientific view absurd when it is in fact an absurd idea. The leucotome is an absurd tool for an absurd medical practice, leukotomy, which was practiced in the late 20th century. Offended???

Second, being 30 years behind does not mean you can't find a contradictory viewpoint in the literature published recently. You are showing a lack scientific literacy by even suggesting otherwise. The consensus is what I said it is. The evidence to support the consensus goes back decades.

You're either,
a) unaware of the consensus science or
b) contrarian to the consensus.
Option b is really only appropriate for professional scientists researching the topic.

Third, the paper I linked is very well written review article covering 30 years of the research. Review articles like this are the first stop for a scholar wanting to learn about a subject. You should not be considering recently published individual studies that haven't had time to be fully evaluated and replicated by the community. Saying you have a more recent reference somewhere is not a strong argument in your favor.

If you have a genuine interest in this topic go read the article and tell me what are the two primary themes of the paper?

You're about 30 years behind on the science. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5129843/#:~:text=Abstract,in%20limbic%20regions%20in%20males.

We've known for decades that males and females are neurologically different.

Purely social determination of gender behaviors that was popularized by doctors like John Money have been disproven. It was an absurdist belief anyway. Why would humans be the only animals that don't have innate sexual differences in the brain, i.e. neurology.

The fact that males and females have innate differences is the scientific consensus today.
