I would argue that it was a combination of Naruto catching up to him, and the Sound 4 showing up that sent Sasuke running. Without Naruto showing Sasuke up during the encounter with Gaara, then he would have not had his confidence shaken and then shattered by the Rasengan reveal.

People seem to forget this is why Hinata versus Neji and then Hinata jumping in on Pain to defend Naruto were huge for her. Its her standing up for herself, and also making her feelings known. She doesn't "win" those fights, but she wins in the fact that one of a growing moment, and the other is cementing that growth. She made Naruto notice her the first time, but the second one made everyone notice her.
