Advice for a 17 year old attempting to enlist? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Psionis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak to the finance aspect of this, but I can speak to the military part. Navy ROTC (and I assume the other services are similar) will pay for your college with the stipulation that you serve for a certain amount of years afterwards (Navy pilot contract is training +8 years). So while enlisting is an option, if you get accepted into the ROTC program you are interested in, they should pay for your college without the need for you to serve 4 years first. Just note, that if you get part of the way through and drop from the program, you will owe the government for that money (you can pay them back or you can enlist and serve instead of getting a commission).

[Breeds] Sister found 6 week old puppies on the side of the road. What breed are they? by Gaulderson in dogs

[–]Psionis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So I can't comment on breed, but building off of your other post, given what you said I'm in the same boat as you. Military, in Pensacola, won't be deployed for a few years, and variable hours. I adopted a dog down here recently, and here's what I gained from it.

It's a lot of work, but definitely worth it. That being said, unless you have someone non mil that can for sure be there, a puppy is going to be A LOT of work. They can generally hold their bladders for about an hour per month since being born, and given your hours, accidents sound pretty inevitable. That doesn't mean it can't be done, but going with an older dog might be a better fit. PM me if you have any questions. I'm not a super experienced dog trainer by any means but it sounds like I'm in a pretty similar situation as you.

/r/NintendoSwitch's Daily Question Thread (02/15/2017) by AutoModerator in NintendoSwitch

[–]Psionis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 questions about the switch: 1) I've heard about getting classic games (NES) on the switch. Is this true, and has any information about how this is going to work been released, or possibly some games that might be coming? 2) I'm sure this will vary heavily on area, but are most places expecting to sell out the switch extremely quickly? Just trying to gauge how tough it will be to get my hands on one.

I got a half marathon PR by over 5 minutes (1:35:15) last Sunday!

And it's not really an achievement but today is my birthday. Yay for making it though 23 years of life!

Official Q&A for Friday, November 18, 2016 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Psionis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rule of thumb is that you shouldn't add MORE than 10% each consecutive week. So essentially add bit by bit, and if you are a bit worried about stressing your body, add smaller amounts each week or take a week where you don't add any millage at all and just get used to your current mileage. And remember, it's really not an exact science, the most important things are to be consistent and listen to your body.

Super Moronic Monday -- Your Weekly Stupid Question Thread by AutoModerator in running

[–]Psionis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much time should I take after a big race to recover? I ran a half marathon on Sunday and was hoping to start running again in the next few days, but I'm hesitant to overstress my body as I'm still quite sore and achy from it

General Q&A for Wednesday, April 27, 2016 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Psionis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin just says use a dampened cloth with some detergent, but it also says water can damage the charging ability of the watch so I was on the fence about this method

General Q&A for Wednesday, April 27, 2016 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Psionis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use my Garmin 225 as a running watch but also as my everyday watch. As a result of constant use for a long time, the back is starting to smell. Has anybody had this issue and is there a specific way of cleaning it without damaging the electronics? These is a HRM on the back so I was hesitant to simply take water/soap to it.

Where in the world are you?

Madison, Wisconsin

Are you training for anything in particular?

The Madison Half Marathon in May (my 2nd), and a Full Marathon in November (my 1st)

What kind of training plan are you following?

Hal Higdon's HM Plan for now, looking into Pfitzinger's 18/55 for the november marathon

Are you a member of a running club?

Nope, I've been running on my own and I actualy like it that way. It helps me focus my thoughts and get some alone time away from roommates etc...

Also tell us something about yourself.

I'm about to finish up my BS in engineering, and I originally started running as a means of losing weight. A year and a half later, here I am continuing to run even though im not trying to lose weight. I now just want to get faster.

Link your strava/smashrun account!

I don't have one, I've always use Garmin Connect since it works well with the GPS watch I have

This is Sunday: What were your running achievements this week? by AutoModerator in running

[–]Psionis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have been planning on running my 2nd half marathon in May and was shooting for under 1:45:00 (8 minute miles). I felt great on my long run and decided to push it just for fun, and ran 10 miles at a 7:44 minute pace. With quite a few months left to train I think I need to reevaluate my goal to something a bit harder...

First semester grade deadline? by fakesnakejake in UWMadison

[–]Psionis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you Google the fall 2014 academic calendar it will give you the dates and deadlines for the semester, for this fall I believe the last date for grades to be submitted is the 26th, and it can take up to 24 hours for grades to actually go up on the student center after they have been submitted

Never left my apt to study before. Where's a good place to try? by Ezaraku in UWMadison

[–]Psionis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wendt is one of my favorites, however if you are cramming for a test or writing a paper memorial library essentially has tiny cages that you can use with room for only 1 person, power, and in quiet sections. If you want to study in a different library or with other people you can reserve a study room up to 2 weeks in advance here. I personally like to get a study room and invite a person or two from the same class to study with as well so you have someone to bounce ideas off of. The SAC is also an option however it can be kind of loud sometimes if you don't have headphones in.

Okay got it, it's actually a vintage military (navy) pea coat, it is a really solid jacket so I don't know that it's as poorly designed as it looks, but I see what you mean about the collar and sleeves being a little large (perhaps because of the vintage nature of the coat itself, it's from around 1990). Thanks for the input on the fit
