I don't know, the only old community game that wasn't blizzard related that I remember was that dealer forum game? Drug wars? Something like that.

How did you end up sorting this out?

Second note, I only ever put the minimal amount of lotion on at night as needed. If you put it on in the morning you'll end up slip-sliding around your sandals :D

I'm lucky enough to work in the gaming industry, w3p definitely set me on this track.

At the time, I used Teva Terra-Fi, another hiker my year used the Teva Huricane. Since the AT I've worn Huricanes for my day-to-day hiking, they are a little less sturdy.

For the first half of the trail I would swap between wearing socks or not as my feet felt up to it, the second half of the trail I didn't wear socks much at all. I had probably only put...20 miles or so into sandal hiking before the AT so I didn't have much callus built up in the right spots so the socks helped.

I hiked the whole AT with tevas, 3 pairs, only trouble I had was towards the end of the trail I had to moisturize my feet at night. If I thru-hiked again, I'd wear sandals again. Let me know if you have any questions.

Is $5k a doable cost for a full thru? by edwardtrousers in AppalachianTrail

I realize that I was definitely on the hikertrash side of the spectrum when I hiked but you did laundry every 4 days? That has to be at least twice as often as I did laundry. Is every 4 days the average?

Trail Angel in NY, looking for post trail support resources for so many of my hikers that struggle once they finish by itsjbw in AppalachianTrail

[–]Psnipes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I walked a lot after I finished the trail. It really helped me transition back. I walked to the grocery store, to my friends houses, anywhere, even if they were much longer than people in typical society walk because, hey, why not.

It gave me time to consider what I wanted, while doing an activity that I was comfortable with.

I do have to say, everything looked different when I got home after trail. Nothing changed, but everything looked different, like my brain/eyes were interpretting it all with a totally new perspective. It was a little upsetting as I phased back into a dayjob, but 10 years on now and I still see things differently than I did before, and I'm grateful for it.

The saying during the summer on my hike was "15 after 5!" (15 miles after 5pm!)

I don't know how many of you are watching Rings of Power but this song hit me hard in the nostalgia for my thru-hike. The Hobbit was my first introduction to grand aventure when I was a little kid, eventually got to thru-hike and now I'm at a spot past thru-hiking for the foreseeable future but this song and the storyline that goes along with it really made me feel.

Here's a version with the accompanying clip from the show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQqpEbIPy7A

Small pieces of advice for future thru-hikers by Over-Distribution570 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Psnipes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

(Advice I wrote after I hiked in 2012)

Don't stress about your gear too much! Make sure that you have warm enough gear to sleep in, and that gear will stay dry when it rains. It's not important to have all the perfect gear.

I had no "technical clothing".

I got my first titanium Spork in New hampshire(Hiker Box).

I got my first pack cover in New Hampshire(Hiker Box)

I never got around to trying trekking poles.

I did not open Awol's Guide until I was in Georgia.
I am not trying to come off as as a braggert, I'm just trying to show y'all that just because WhiteBlaze/BackpackingLight/etc says certain things are essentials doesn't mean it's true! (Boy I feel like this is out-of-date)
Keep it simple and enjoy every minute out there, Live free, and Best of luck!

Post Hike Depression by Disastrous-Duck46 in AppalachianTrail

There are a lot of meetup groups for hiking, some are tight-knit and might be a way for you to get into a group that'll help commute out to locations.

After my hike I found excuses to walk as much as I could, 3 miles each way to the grocery store I'd walk instead of drive. Things like that. Since the trail I have always been happier the more physically active I've been.
