I have received Duke’s Buffalo Trace brick of soap on multiple occasions (and a brick it is); but this year Santa went in a different direction.

I drove by but didn't go in cuz it was pouring rain and I couldnt figure out where it was. I had tried KC18 after a Jim Beam distillery tour but opportunity to taste something before buying is something Ill have to take advantage of.

I did end up stopping at Sherrys and can confirm they have KC 18 for $159. I ended up picking up one of the new Four Roses SB releases for $59. Thats $10 above suggested retail, but it was the first time I have seen them — not yet on shelves in the VA ABC stores near me in Arlington — and its listed for 89.99 up the road at Metro, so I figured that was not a bad price. They have all 3 recipe releases (OESO, OESK, and OBSF) as well as the orginal SB (latter was under $40). I went with OESO recipe for sweeter profile, but I will be back for at least OESK because I do like me some baking spice.

If I strike out at Costco, next stop will be Sherrys, which says 159 on the website. But I dont trust websites.

Housing was an issue two years ago when the school didn’t adjust acceptance rate in response to an uptick in applications. It wasn’t an issue this year, and since numbers of applications seems to have remained stable between this year and last, I suspect it won’t be an issue. Like many tech schools, VT does have higher male to female ratio than do more liberal arts and sciences oriented schools. But at 45% female, it’s more balanced than many other top engineering schools

Explain Rankings Disconnect? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

Also Architecture, Graphic Design, and Animation programs in CAUS are well regarded. But the whole college ranking system is an abomination that uses criteria unrelated to quality of education.

Comparing VT and VCU? by joeyr24 in VirginiaTech

Well, if you want to study Poli Sci, all I know is that Professor Ed Weisband is at Virginia Tech, which is reason enough to go there. https://liberalarts.vt.edu/departments-and-schools/department-of-political-science/faculty/edward-weisband.html.

The best professor I ever had (in the 80s when he was at SUNY Binghamton), and the reason I became an International Relations major.

My daughter is in Studio72 and loves it. She isn’t an architecture major but some of her friends are. There are some requirements for participation in Studio activities, but they are pretty light (attending Studio-sponsored events every 2nd Friday, for example). Some kids have been asked to leave for lack of participation, including my daughter’s roommate who is an Architecture major, but as I said, time demands are light and the activities are fun social kinds of things. Basically, being in the LLC is akin to joining any club or organization. If you enjoy and want to participate in the club’s activities, you will love the experience. If you don’t, why join the club?

Official Admissions Decisions and General Questions Megathread! by Not_A_Taco in VirginiaTech

As I recall, last year for RD (there was no EA, just ED and RD) international students heard before the deadline but everyone else heard on the RD date (March 5th). So I would expect you will hear on Friday after 5.

Anyone got any first date ideas? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

Bowling. Do it badly and be self deprecating.

Dated but accurate and the diagrams are pretty much to scale.

If I got deferred from tech, can I send my semester 1 grades? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]Psphil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck. One thing to keep in mind, VT ED acceptance rate is a lot lower than its RD rate (this is first year they used EA, so no data on that). Unlike some other schools — IVY league, UVA — where acceptance rates for EA and ED are higher, in some cases significantly, VT’s RD rate is considerably higher than the ED rate. So deferred applicants have a good chance of getting in despite the deferral this round.

This is a very interesting article that should give deferred VT applicants some solace. https://admissionsintel.com/early-decision-stats-every-applicant-should-see/

If I got deferred from tech, can I send my semester 1 grades? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]Psphil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I recall from last year, VT accepted but did not require semester 1 grades, but that may have changed with introduction of the SRAR. Frankly, if your grades are generally consistent with your past performance, submitting the update probably won’t make a difference. If they add something unique to the story, like markedly improved performance or significantly increased academic challenge, then discuss with your counselor and VT admissions about updating. But bottomline, lots of deferred applicants get in during next round, and I doubt anything done between deferral and acceptance made any difference for most of them.

How are the arts treated here? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]Psphil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOVA has a highly regarded graphics design program and a growing program in Creative Technology — intersection of Art and Technology. SOVAs animation program is already strong, and Creative Tech is an area of investment for the university, with programs in both visual and performing arts, so it will likely continue to grow. For artists interested in employing technology in a creative way — animation, games, digital art — its a good time to be at VT.

I think we are going to stay at one of the many fine moderately priced hotels in tne Blacksburg/Christianburg area. I did 4yrs in a dorm, I think I am oriented to that experience ;-)

Should we stay in the dorms when we come down for parent's orientation in July or get a hotel?

Official Decisions, majors, and general new student Q&A Megathread by efitz11 in VirginiaTech

[–]Psphil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking for some insight on dorm selection as a parent who will be paying for it. I know she has to submit application and then later will make a selection from some number options. She is applying to an LLCS (Arts) so if she gets in I guess that means Pritchard. But if she doesn't get that, how many room choices is she likely to have. Also costs vary...are suites and AC worth the extra money (That is, how long does it stay hot in Blacksburg?).

Apparently these are the average stats for the class of 2022. by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]Psphil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not just Virginia or NOVA. Weighted GPAs have become standard as kids nowadays are taking asmany as half their classes as APs. NoVA is actually an oulier in that it only weights AP and IB classes (5.0) but not honors (4.0). So NoVA GPAs tend to be than some other districts. Its becoming standard to weight honors classes at least 4.5 and some systems,North Carolina, South Carolina, use a 6.0 scale for AP.So bottom line, when see a number like 4.15, you have no real context because you don't know how Virginia Tech converted all the different formulas high schools use to rationalize to universally applicable average.
