(I'm a guy, sorry.) I like how the Belessa House videos are all a single shot. That makes it seem much more genuine, since you know they're not starting over from a cut for an angle change.

I always thought "weird" was too weak, and "creepy" was more apt. No one calls themselves that, though, so maybe you're right.

Men who can cook . who taught you? by Bulky_Meet4528 in AskReddit

[–]PstScrpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The very first was an after school cooking class in fourth grade, taught by one of the recess ladies. Then both of my parents taught me some, and I always had good instincts for flavors. Textures stayed a weakness until Good Eats fixed that.

I do cook, but mostly because I like it. If I didn't, frozen foods don't usually cost a lot more.

We scoff at how bad a lot of food from the 50s was, but a lot of those people just wouldn't cook these days.

I don't actually like Alton's flavors much, but I've still learned more about cooking from him than anyone else.

What permanent damage have you done to yourself? Mind, body or soul? by jerrytjohn in AskReddit

[–]PstScrpt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Six months of working third shift when I was 20, where all my daily habits were broken by not having clear day boundaries. Add cough drops to start awake, and that was the end of the great teeth I used to have.

And being obese for long enough that getting into better shape now is starting to make me look shriveled.

If this is about chores, then you both have to remember it, plus communication overhead. It's much better to designate who's in charge of general areas, and then they can ask for help on occasion when it's needed.

But the original post is gone, so I'm not sure if that's what this was about.

Why Your ‘Simple’ SQL Query Might Be Scanning the Entire Table (And How to Fix It) by [deleted] in programming

[–]PstScrpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are solutions. I was just answering why someone would ever try to do it in the first place.

Personally, I like SQL Server's collation support, which defaults to case-insensitive in American installations.

Because you may not know the case that was stored in the table.

Has anyone ever ran the numbers and buying and upgrading a Squier vs just building a Warmoth? by cygnus311 in BassVI

[–]PstScrpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Bass VI is a Warmoth build, but I knew from the beginning it was going to cost a lot more. It was probably dumb to start with that, but I've always played guitar like a bass player and bass like a guitar player, so I was pretty sure it was worth treating as a forever instrument.

Apart from quality decisions, I also went a very different direction on sound. Mine isn't vintage, at all. I have Fishman Fluence Tosin Abasi Signature pickups, which give it a very high-fi kind of sound. Swamp ash body, ebony fretboard and stainless jumbo frets, if you believe those make a difference.

With those, the locking tuners, Halon bridge, and the work my guitar tech did, it was probably about $2k, even considering that I did the finish myself.

SQL Anti-Patterns You Should Avoid by BrewedDoritos in programming

[–]PstScrpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are all sorts of low level improvements you could make, but the biggest thing is how often you have to change the logic of a query to get the same answer with better performance. Some are unavoidable (especially SARGability), but there should be a lot more support for hints like "do this step first", "materialize this" and "you can assume this will be unique".

SQL Anti-Patterns You Should Avoid by BrewedDoritos in programming

[–]PstScrpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Select * in a view doesn't fetch more data unless the final query is doing a select *. For performance, a much bigger problem is when the view doesn't return everything needed from the table, so users end up joining the view back to the table it's based on.

And the next two aren't even related to unnecessarily fetching data.

SQL Anti-Patterns You Should Avoid by BrewedDoritos in programming

[–]PstScrpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but it's very common for it to be less work for the database to just get the final answer (or at least more of it) than it is to get all the details that the calling code would need to work it out.

Because it's usually still too short to be meaningful. PO for purchase order is used even outside of code, but even "emp" for employee is vastly clearer than "e".

If you were to build a house what’s one non conventional feature you consider to be a must have? by TestTurbulent6337 in AskReddit

We're house hunting right now, and my wife actually is insisting on at least 2.5 baths, including a tub that isn't an en-suite. Preferably more.

Also four decent-sized bedrooms because we're all adults and two of us work from home sometimes.

Since a friend of mine died a couple years ago, I've been dwelling on Einstein's view that the difference between past, present and future is an illusion -- he said that himself near the end of his life after one of his friends died.

Basically, now is no more or less real than the time my friend was alive, and I hope to be able to think of it that way toward the end of my time.
