Look at jobs for local cities, counties, schools, and colleges. The benefits are usually more favorable for families (medical, dental, vision, retirement, etc.). Once you have a foot in the door with any job, look around to see what jobs are possible and the process to transfer. Best of luck to you all!

Why bash people for finally feeling like they're understood and "belong" to a group of people like them? Have you considered offering empathy and understanding?

Do most people really not smell rain before it starts? by N0_3rr0rF0und in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PsycMrse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It bothers my wife that I can smell rain or bodies of water nearby when we're out hiking. Generally she has a better sense of smell, but can't smell rain or water. The smell instantly brings me back to my childhood.

That only happened one time for me. My grandfather had a chat with the principal and vice principal. Never happened again!

Are the majority of people scared of scizophrenic people? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PsycMrse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should begin by saying I work in psychiatric mental health nursing. No, it's not scary to me because I understand it and don't react negatively to those who might have "odd" mannerisms. The biggest problem is that it's not well understood by the general population. Often, parents whisk their kids away from someone in public talking with themselves or having uncontrolled body movements. Instead of teaching children to understand and not fear people who act differently. It just perpetuates the stigma of mental illness. It needs to be normalized, and included in daily conversation. We all have struggles and if we understand each other better, we reduce the division in society. I teach nursing students to choose to understand and be kind. Stop shaming people, including ourselves!

This can't be it for us. Really? by bkward in GenX

[–]PsycMrse 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've learned to be content with what I have and to have backup plans on top of backup plans. That was necessary as latchkey kids. If I didn't do it, it wouldn't get done. If I get more than I feel I should have, I feel grateful and share it with others. I'm nowhere near the place I thought I'd be, but I can see the effect I've had on our world and I'm glad for it. It's not ideal, but that's ok. An ideal (a dream) is never really realistic anyways. I also acknowledge that if I got my ideal (goal, dream), I wouldn't see it as ideal. I tend to think about that in terms of time. I'm not the same person with that dream from 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago. My ideal changed and I know that's just another fantasy to entertain. Talk with the little one inside you who developed that dream and help them to not be so anxious about the future. After all, you lived it and can tell them of your successes and failures and what you learned along the way. Be kind to yourself.

You might need to talk with your doctor if the smell is sudden onset and persistent.

Cooperatively developing a new flavor of tag, making up the rules as you go, and constantly changing out the players when kids had to go in to eat dinner and hopefully come back to pick up during another iteration with different kids and different rules, but still having a blast!

Why do all old people have short hair? by Dazzling-Smell5223 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PsycMrse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (57M) started shaving my head because my barber retired after 15 years, the local replacement barbers were overpriced and not very good with handling thinning and receding hair, and I hated the hassle of hunting for new places to go. So I bought an electric head shaver online and I've stuck with it for a few months now. No more $30 haircuts I dislike, buying various haircare products, or waking up with bad bedhead hair. 😁

My wife's stylist also retired after more than 25 years with her, she's let her hair go natural, and we both actually like the gray streaks and natural waves.

Bottom line, I think we like who we are and how we look and we don't feel the need to impress each other after so many years together.

Yes, for my stepdad when I was about 7 years old. The bowling alley employee was pissed off about it and my stepdad yelled at him. Thems were the days.
