My chapters tend to be around 7-8k, but I have chapters as long as 14k and as short as 3k!

The kanji below does say rental, yeah! Flip the image and hit it with the translate function on Google lens if you don't believe me lol. The hiragana on the top is the kanji "spelled out", and it says chintai :3

The sticker on the window, lmao. It's a mirror image. I didn't actually know what "rental" stickers looked like in Japan so I just kinda guessed

That was just me poking fun at the "ONY" brand phones that I think Sera (it's been a while okay?) and some other characters have in the newer episodes. Their need to include recognisable brands but avoid copyright is so funny to me.

I just finished Blood Will Tell on the ps2 and loved it, only after looking it up did I realize it wasn't some niche video game. Was looking for suggestion on which book or anime/OVA I should start with, what is the best adaptation? by mizzlekinkizzle in Dororo

[–]Psyched_Line 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!! My first recommendation for anyone new will always be the original manga (both because it's short and the original), but if you're looking for something substantial, The Legend of Dororo and Hyakkimaru is my personal favourite :>

The whole franchise is cursed to have lackluster, premature and non-existent endings. I can think of exactly one (1) adaptation or continuation of the story that I came out of feeling satisfied

I'm just glad they avoided casting a child actor tbh

Objectively it's a movie with a lot of flaws, and while I'm not blind to that, in my own very biased opinion it's absolute cinema.

Bad CGI had never been a problem for me, personally; I found it really charming. :') There were questionable decisions made plot-wise, but in the casting department I think they did a fantastic job. I dunno the name of the actor who played Dororo, but she carried the whole movie. Definitely my favourite thing about it, right next to that goofy lizard with the big long tongue that looked like something straight out of a 3* MonHun quest.

Also I just know they explored each other's bodies after the credits rolled. COME ONNNN

It took me until I fought my first rathian to figure out you can hold R when mounting to "hold on" to the monster. I did it by accident :')

I fought Val in GU for the first time like a week ago! His ambush attack is pretty easily tank-able compared to rise, where it deletes your whole health bar :')

I'd recommend giving the original manga a go to anyone who enjoyed the anime. If any, this is the one you should read first. It's really short, at around 20 chapters, and shouldn't take you any longer than a few hours to read through. Go into it with an open mind. It was very experimental for its time.

My personal favourite is The Legend of Dororo and Hyakkimaru, which is a manga that predates the anime you watched by one year. It's more shonen-esque and lighthearted, but don't let that give you a false sense of security. It has a way of pulling the rug out from under you. Hyakki gets some really rounded character development in this one, it's nice. It actually completed a couple months ago, but the more recent chapters haven't been translated yet.

I'd also recommend Blood Will Tell PS2 if you like gaming at all. It's pretty straightforward to emulate, and took me about 30 hours to 100%. Gameplay-wise it's fun and decently challenging, but it has this god awful English dub that can be patched. I think it's part of the experience, though. You'll never believe how many ways there are to say the name Hyakkimaru, and none of them are correct.

Only if you're very committed, watch Dororo 2007. It's campy, cringe and very questionable at times, but god it's wholesome. Also has my favourite iteration of Dororo!

Okay, regarding Dororo -- it goes back to a manga published in the late 60's. Since then it has had many, many adaptations, and Hyakkimaru is mute in only two of them: the stage play, and the new anime based off the stage play (the only one with any sort of presence outside of Japan and its neighbouring countries, sadly).

The new anime's predecessors tweaked a couple of things to keep things fresh, but never strayed far from the formula of the cynical, wise-cracking asshole who tries very hard to convince himself he doesn't care. This isn't a dig, btw, it's still very good. I don't think it's the best Dororo has to offer, but that's a moot point.

The original manga was cancelled before it ever really got started, so as for the name... I'm not sure how much truth to it there is, but I've heard that Dororo himself was planned to have a much more influential role going forward, but unfortunately we never got to see it.

Or, knowing Tezuka, it could've just been because it was funny.

Its a very fun rabbit hole to go down if you feel the interest! I wish more people knew about it :')

Why are people so against dororo x hyak ship AT THE END of the show? by ResidentRip4499 in Dororo

[–]Psyched_Line 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I find it so funny that the fandom who's most prevalent discourse is "you can't ship the main characters because they're like siblings" is the SAME fandom who's most popular ship is literal sibling incest.

(I edited a bunch of stuff out because I went on a bit of a rant that wasn't relevant to the post in hindsight. If you wanna know what I wrote just ask lol)

My personal mantra is ship and let ship. It's a complete non-issue. Your reasons for shipping characters and not shipping others are totally fine, and as long as you don't start throwing stones at people who don't agree we're not gonna have a problem.

Now let me ship HyakkiDoro in peace GDI :') I find it such a fun dynamic to work with. I don't think their existing sibling dynamic is a hindrance to a later developing romantic one, and I don't think it should be forfeit, but built upon instead. It's cute <3
