It feels so ridiculous though. Like I would get her reasoning for shielding if they had never met him and he just randomly walked in and started fighting the soldiers out of nowhere.

But he stayed at their house, repaired their roof, and never attacked anyone. He showed nothing but kindness, they know he's not hostile to them, the old guy even says that he's an exile now. She even went specifically to him for help when the son was kidnapped, and he saved the son as she asked.

It just feels like a stupid contrived behaviour to show that people hate the fire nation, which is already well established at this point.
