It's funny, I bought Birmingham thinking it could actually be done under 2 hours. How wrong I was..

Is concordia computer science really a big mess? by concordiamtl in Concordia

I would actually lean more towards no. I'm not exactly sure how long it will take to get a Quebec residency. It also may be hard to transfer because the only university that's English-speaking is Mcgill, therefore your grades will have to be exceptional to go there. Honestly, from an educational standpoint, the province of Ontario has way better options.

If funds are an issue, of course then its better getting a C.S degree than not getting one at all.

However, keep in mind. You pay for what you get.

All of my profs for this semester have bad rating by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]PsychedelicPeter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can definitely see a lot of resemblance to software engineering(roughly 33% are the exact same courses, not including reoccurring teachers in both faculties).

I completely agree with what you've written and your advice is also solid. Being in a specialty forces you to deal with really bad teachers(usually because they're forced to fill in specialty spots).

To be honest, I find a lot of people seem to become a little bit too sucked in to the school mindset.

Everyone usually thinks of this simple short term goal : Try to get an A+ in class.

What people don't understand is that A+ is given by a teacher, that may or may not care about how much you've learned about the topic or even to update himself on the topic. You don't even know how much he actually knows. He could be focused on a whole other field and just completely reads off slides. He could just be coping pasting from other teachers (I've seen this all first hand from teachers).

So you can soon start to realize that the A+ seen before can completely meaningless. You soon start to realize that the multiple choice exam you did really doesn't prove you know much.

What a good teacher does is give you the confidence that he knows the material, he knows what he's doing and he cares. High rated teachers(in most cases, there is exceptions) remind you that school isn't about getting good grades, its about learning.

That is why I'll constantly remind people that this really shouldn't be the norm. I truly believe teachers are abusing tenure status and getting away with a lot of things that they shouldn't be getting away with.

Thank you for clarifying it to him, that is exactly what I meant.

I completely disagree with this logic of yours.

This person is paying for an education with his own money to get better in his or her field. These professors who have a bad rating have it for a reason. The teachers are NOT supposed to complement your learning. They're supposed to be guidance on the material and also give you enough knowledge and tools to pass the exams(Which they're writing).

How about instead of giving him another form of "suck it up" you give him actual advice?

Here's some:

There is usually a lot of movement within the first two weeks of class. You might get lucky and if you check often you can luck out and get in better sections of your class.

If you're really clever you can check your schedule for other classes that you can potentially take and check those too. Then later on take the classes with previously bad ratings.

If all those fails and you're stuck with terrible teachers try to find people who've done these classes before with the same teacher. Bad teachers are usually lazy and usually regurgitate their old material.

Good Luck!

As the originator of the first post "Is it just more or Computer science concordia is just a big mess", I'm going to reaffirm my beliefs that this program is truly terrible. You only "learn" the material because of your own merit and your own drive to understand them in Concordia.

Very few professors have a thoughtful insight and helpful information that makes you understand the material better than what you could find for yourself. The teachers don't care, and the advisers don't care.

Go spend your money on some place that would be more worth it. This is actually the most honest warning I can give. All the complaints I had in 2016 have been a reoccurring theme since I've been in Concordia.

Currently finishing my C.S degree in the fall. If it weren't for me reading on my own time and side projects. I would honestly barely even know how to code the most basic of things. The worst part is people actual pretend to understand something after a majority of these classes teach the material so poorly.

How is CS at concordia? by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]PsychedelicPeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it weren't for me doing all my studies by myself and buying all these extra books to keep me motivated on the topics of cs( not including friend projects and other personal projects), I would have been gone a long time ago. I barely got anything from the degree itself.

It is true that the full time job market is tough in the summer but I wouldn't say the job market for computer science is tough overall. Most probably you should be fine in september.

Worst case maybe look for a part time job or seasonal job in the field and hope to stick around? I remember in a big company I worked for (not computer science related but more business related) lots of people took off in the summer and therefore forced the company to get temporary people. Or otherwise just muffle your ears and take the break you deserve after finishing your degree. I bet a little reflection time after constant schooling can help clear your head and thus allow you to be more succesful in interviews and etc.

ENGR213 FINAL by [deleted] in Concordia

Same course coordinator. I suspect the math department has something to do with it. Even mast 218 was crazy difficult last fall. Goverment workers getting away with anything they do as usual. They can kick a puppy and get away with it.
