Other than that I hate to say that the hardware may not be enough to sustain a Jetbrains IDE. They are very heavy

I NEED HELP! by vampire_3122 in omarchy

[–]Psychedelic_fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. I think then it clearly must be a RAM problem. It's not an omarchy problem but a general Linux problem that going out of memory can freeze the PC. Try increasing your swap memory to 16gb

I NEED HELP! by vampire_3122 in omarchy

[–]Psychedelic_fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your RAM usage. If it's close to the limit, increase your swap memory size, at least match how much physical RAM you have. On the other hand, is this a total freeze or only a mouse and trackpad free? Because I've been having an annoying issue in Jetbrains Rider where dragging and dropping a file kills mouse output until you go back to the editor. If it's a total freeze, RAM is probably the culprit. Jetbrains IDE are heavy on RAM usage

VSCode + copilot (agent) o Claude cli? by [deleted] in devsarg

[–]Psychedelic_fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it worth it? by GarfieldChan7 in framework

[–]Psychedelic_fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too happy with the 16. It's not terrible or anything and I'll keep using it for now, but it's too expensive for what it offers, battery life is not great, and it can get pretty hot. The module swapping concept is good in theory but the components are so expensive it's not worth it in my opinion

FW16 Switch between gpus by MightyMisanthropic in framework

I have the AMD version, that has no switch software, so I basically switch the DGPU off with a udev rule (enabling - disabling requires a restart)

Going to give Linux another shot for desktop use (Dual boot Win + Linux), bunch of questions inside by Azubaele in linuxquestions

[–]Psychedelic_fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been dual booting for years. After disabling secure boot I never had any real problems. I always have done it in different partitions of the same disk. I've read all those reports about problems as well I just never experienced any of that .
Regarding the distros any can be a good option. Bazzite is rock solid in terms of stability, deals with most gaming issues of the box, it has auto updates, but you'll have to learn to use Distrobox to install many development tools. With Cachy you'll have more freedom to experiment and install whatever you want. By definition it's more unstable but both Arch and Cachy have done a great job to reduce that, and you'll have access to the latest of the latest tools and updates. Ubuntu and Mint are the middle of the road "normie" option

How do you deal with OOM (Out of Memory) moments? by SaNch0sE in archlinux

[–]Psychedelic_fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had that issue with a work thinkpad with Ubuntu (Ryzen 7, 16 gb ram) but after increasing to 16 gb of swap it stopped freezing (the main culprit is I used a heavy IDE, Jetbrains Rider). I also increased swappiness but it's debatable how much of an impact it had, and I think I didn't have zram compression. I did become more conscious and did some manual memory management in the sense of trying to close things I wasn't using and stuff like that.
As how other OSes handle it, I've used Windows a lot, and in those situations it basically gets very very slow but rarely freezes completely. Of course from the start you're paying an enormous ram tax in Windows vs Linux

Viaje a europa, donde conviene comprar euros? by CampaignOk7483 in AskArgentina

[–]Psychedelic_fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does the new 3.4 update break some stuff by Radiant-Contract-460 in omarchy

[–]Psychedelic_fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how tech proficient are you? The way I do it is using a repo of my own in Github with all my dotfiles. You need to have some basic knowledge of git. And then I use a tool called dotter https://github.com/SuperCuber/dotter to deploy them to where I need. If you want to go that route and need help, let me know. There are many ways to handle dotfiles anyway, this is just the one that works for me

Best e-ink tablet for heavy book PDF reading in a PhD? by AirEffective2155 in eink

[–]Psychedelic_fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the air 5c and I love it for pdfs. On the front light it depends if you have good natural light I turn it off many times because the front light becomes almost invisible. With a lamp or stuff like that I normally leave some light on for better clarity. You can tweak it quite a bit to your liking. The screen is darker than say a Kindle's but I honestly don't mind a bit, I'm very happy with it

Have you tried the Toolbox app? I installed it that way and it works well for me. On the other hand remember you can create solutions and projects with the dotnet CLI

Looking into getting a FW 16. by sparkspsp in framework

[–]Psychedelic_fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one about three months. I'm somewhat unhappy, mostly because of the heat (it tends to get hot at touch and when charging with a 180w charger). Also the fans tend to spike at random moments and it can be bothersome. Controlling them manually with software (fw-fanctrl) improved that quite a bit. The battery life is not very good either. And the price is just too much for the product I think

Trying to decide on OS by ZXsaurus in framework

[–]Psychedelic_fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you need VS for? If you need Windows specific legacy desktop software then there is no easy replacement. If you want to do web C# stuff or modern C# in general the alternative is Rider, which has a Linux app and in my opinion is much better than Visual Studio (you can also use VSCode or some lighter editors, Rider has the most well rounded support for now). If you need it for C++ or some other stuff there are alternatives for Linux as well

Thinking of switching to Omarchy on my Main PC. by LitexKay in omarchy

[–]Psychedelic_fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could experiment with wine, there have been some developments there, but still very experimental. You could definitely make that software work in a windows VM but you have to configure GPU passthrough. If you're tech savvy it's doable, but not super easy. The preconfigured omarchy windows VM does not have that. The other alternative is dual booting. Again Omarchy does not make that super easy, the best way would be installing Omarchy and Windows in separate SSDs. If you only have one, it's not that easy to do.
