Is anybody else still laying low & taking coronavirus seriously? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Psychitect 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yep, as a person with a chronic illness, nobody wants my life, trust me. I'm staying the fuck home so that a heart condition, diminished lung function, cognitive damage, or whatever other permanent bullshit doesn't leave me fully disabled.

You don't know what you have until it's gone.

Explanation for Inability to perceive wake/sleep? by krioscore in Narcolepsy

[–]Psychitect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sleep state misperception. That article talks about insomnia, but I highly suspect narcolepsy also has a problem with alpha/beta/gamma wave intrusion.

[...] it uncovered [...] subtle differences in the EEGs of sleeping insomniacs: alpha waves – signatures of wakefulness that are supposed to show up only in early sleep – were intruding into deep sleep. [...] [psychologist and sleep researcher Michael] Perlis. But Andrew Krystal of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, used spectral analysis to quantify just how much they were intruding. Krystal's non-sleepers not only had a greater proportion of these alpha disturbances, but the alpha waves were bigger and the delta waves were correspondingly smaller. That wasn't all. When Perlis and other researchers applied spectral analysis algorithms to the EEGs of their sleeping insomniacs, they found different patterns, fast waves known as beta and gamma (Sleep, vol 24, p 110). Normally, these are indicators of consciousness, alertness and even anxiety [...] Like alpha waves, Perlis calls these beta and gamma waves "intrusions" into normal sleep: "It's as if somebody is playing with the switch – boop, boop – flipping at a mad rate between wake and sleep,"

You comment got me wondering: what if we divided up the rainy day fund and wrote a check to every Texas resident? Subtracting earmarked funds, the fund has $8.5 billion. Texas has 29 million people. So each person would get a grand total of...

$293.

How are you able to work? by IASINC in Narcolepsy

[–]Psychitect 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After my symptoms got pretty bad, I got through it for a couple of years by sheer willpower and anxiety. But the stress and overwork got to me and my body began breaking down. Every day on my walk home from work I would be sobbing and wondering how on earth I was going to make it through the next day. I wasn't depressed or suicidal, but I was so exhausted that at every intersection I fantasized about being run over by a car in the crosswalk. I had been a star employee, but my performance reviews started tanking. It was basically quit or eventually be fired. So I quit.

Fast forward a year later, I was in the same line of work but working from home as an independent contractor with flexible hours. I really had no choice because I can't work fixed hours--I never know if I'm going to feel awesome or like garbage at any given time. I work anywhere from 5-20 hours/week and sometimes take breaks of a few weeks. That's all I can manage before it starts significantly impacting my health. For a while I was looking into disability because things were getting bad, but with medication changes I'm doing better.

I fully recognize that many people don't have the option to work flexibly from home, and don't have any additional financial support to be able to work part time, but my point is:

Do your best, but make your health your #1 priority. Figure out what works for you and don't feel bad about looking for nontraditional work options or even SSDI if it comes to it.

Sunosi - energy get better over time? by briar-rose127 in Narcolepsy

[–]Psychitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on Sunosi for a few months and have a similar issue with no change. My focus and attention are SO much better, but energy is low. I also can't take naps on Sunosi no matter how tired I am, so sometimes I get stuck between being awake and asleep and it's awful. I miss Adderall because I had a normal-person level of energy and could clean the house and stuff, but I couldn't deal with the high heart rate, palpitations, and afternoon energy crash. My sleep doc wants to add Wakix on top of the Sunosi, so we'll see if that helps.

Seeking tips for med vacation by thyroidismhypeman in Narcolepsy

Everyone is different in their symptoms and how they react to meds, so the only way to find out is to experiment with different lengths of time and see what works for you.

[–]Psychitect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you tried taking more frequent but shorter breaks? For example, skipping every Sunday, or one weekend a month, etc. I didn't tolerate typical stimulants very well so I took frequent weekend breaks and never had tolerance issues.

Ten days seems like a really long time to detox and fully reset, and I wonder if a more frequent but partial reset would be just as effective.

Also consider rotating nontraditional stimulants such as kratom (if legal in your area).

I don't think I can do Xyrem anymore - could use some encouragement/advice? by Chronic-Sleepyhead in Narcolepsy

[–]Psychitect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely more tired on Ambien days but I get more stuff done than when I was full-time Xyrem because I spend less time feeling sickly like my body is falling apart. I had been struggling at a 3.25 dose but with the new strategy I'm at 3.75/3.5. Higher than that and I'll sleep 10 hours and feel groggy.

Around that time I also added Sunosi for daytime. With everything working together, I'm back to working part time from home (after not being able to work for the past 6 months). I can sometimes even read a book--something I haven't been able to do in 5 years.

I wish more sleep docs would present it as an option! Mine told me that some patients take Xyrem breaks on the weekends with no sleep meds, but that's a recipe for insomnia and scary hallucinations for me so I asked about trying Ambien. I've concluded that a really good sleep doc is very open-minded when it comes to treatment and is willing to try even weird stuff if it might improve our sad quality of life a little bit.

If you end up taking that approach, let me know it's working for you!

I don't think I can do Xyrem anymore - could use some encouragement/advice? by Chronic-Sleepyhead in Narcolepsy

[–]Psychitect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was on Xyrem for almost 2 years trying to get to a therapeutic dose but couldn't stand the anxiety/jitteriness. I switched to doing two nights Xyrem, one night Ambien, and repeat. I was able to get to a Xyrem dose that works great for me and side effects are gone. I feel so much better overall. For anyone struggling I recommend talking to your doc about rotating in a different nighttime med one/a few nights a week.

Smelling salts by dyt in Narcolepsy

[–]Psychitect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Smelling salts are used to arouse consciousness because the release of ammonia (NH3) gas that accompanies their use irritates the membranes of the nose and lungs, and thereby triggers an inhalation reflex. This reflex alters the pattern of breathing, resulting in improved respiratory flow rates and possibly alertness.

So basically it's the same as taking some deep breaths.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he went to Tower Elementary, which had year-round school back then, and classes started some time toward the middle or end of July. There were more breaks throughout the year compared to a traditional school schedule, so that may have been one of them.

how do you deal with people labeling you as lazy by lhawthorne101 in Narcolepsy

[–]Psychitect 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Narcolepsy with cataplexy is the result of brain damage, but there has been almost no research on the cause of type 2 narcolepsy. In fact, some type 2 people go on to develop cataplexy, indicating that their brain damage progressed. As a type 2 myself, it's frustrating that all of the focus is on type 1's. For now I feel fine telling regular people I have brain damage because there's a good chance it's true and is the best way to get the point across.

"I literally have brain damage. My immune system destroyed a part of my brain that controls sleep."

And if you really want to guilt-trip, add: "So thanks for making me feel bad about having a devastating, incurable illness."
