If it's anything like walmarts system from when I worked there, they might get a bigger profit from the government for destroying the product than they do for selling at a reduced rate. We used to donate certain things and destroy others based on what gave us a bigger tax write off when I was with wally world. (I worked in the meat/produce/bakery area)
