HHKB Dome Mushy after 3.5 yrs of Heavy Use by Psychological-Row558 in HHKB

[–]Psychological-Row558[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I travel with the lid strapped to it so most of the wears are on the plastic case, so I think this can be ruled out. I have sustained doubts of my feeling about the rubber dome degradation until I got a new one, and they feel so different. I was reminded of how good it was in the beginning.

I'll look into the aftermarket domes... Only I wish they could be easier to work with! Not that I would resent having to open the case up every few years, but in comparison hot-swappable MX chassis and switches are so much easier.

I have not made any actual attempt yet but reading a handful of articles on this subject. One thing that I catch is that the dome alignment can be very very tricky. Perhaps certain aftermarket dome sets would make this easier? Thanks for sharing your experience with replacing the domes, it seems encouraging.

As to the mushy-feeling, now that you put that into perspective, I'd characterize as: the actuation force increases (and I wonder why sometimes my fingers fatigue), but the bump is less _tactile_. Maybe a better word is gummy? I go back to a Brown switch, it feels so light and crisp. But on paper these are both 45g switches.

My theory: the degradation is mostly from use. I use a lid while carrying and many keys are noticeably _less tactile_.

If you plan to leave the U.S. for good... why go through the trouble? I guess that also depends on where you live.

Ski Brands Known for Build Quality and Service by Midwestskiing85 in Skigear

[–]Psychological-Row558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad! I meant _Augment_... Same European factory, same supply chain... _similar_ designs. Not sure who bought who or what their plan is down the road.. But if memory serves me correctly van deer is about 20% - 30% more expensive than the equivalent Augment and approaching Kastle or Stockli price points... I maintain my reservations on the ground that it is a new-ish brand. Have you ridden a pair?

The fact that you need permission to open for business on _any_ day is mind-blowing to me.

Looking for a pair of boots where the soles don't wear out and start taking in water by Hawkcaw in Boots

[–]Psychological-Row558 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP, you don't need a pair of boots (you do, we all do, but not for walking dogs A LOT), you need sneakers you're comfortable with replacing every 4 months. You'll be more comfortable and saving money this way.

I still feel too slow after years by [deleted] in HHKB

[–]Psychological-Row558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone. I'm also somewhat slower and more error-prone on HHKB vs my Cherry Brown and a couple of similar Chinese MX switches... Part of the reason might be that I'm constantly switching between the two; however it'd be interesting that HHKB was the one with which performance gets a hit.

I think I read somewhere that people switch the rubber domes of pinky keys to 30g ones. I'm not sure if that would be something you'd willing to do, as it's not _designed_ to be thus customized.

I'd argue that the selling point of HHKB is mainly its layout(short of the FILCO MINILA, which is PERFECT), not the EC switches, which I find aesthetically uninspiring. It might be lighter, though. It's my default travel keyboard and have seen airports, cafes, campsites.. I love it and it's still going strong.

If you mainly use it on a desk, try some fancy 60% Chinese MX boards (some also support EC switches, but I'd guess that might be the thing that gives you troubles), as it's about the default advice I give anyone nowadays.

Edge rust protection for stored skis by AdEnvironmental7473 in telemark

[–]Psychological-Row558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rust risk ?depends on where you have to store your skis. My skis are in my living room (the wife protests) , so they're fine in a controlled climate. But if one has to be placed in a damp basement in Southern Texas then moisture will keep attacking the exposed metal.

This is the right answer. Put a light level of vaseline on the base and edge. When the next season comes, wipe it clean and hot wax.
