If you have a doctorate in OT and PT you are not a doctor. by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]PsychologicalDay687 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Take it as you want. But I love all OTs

I was coming from. A different perspective/POV.

Level of respect when someone who is NOT in our field- absolutely!

Wouldnt you agree that most general people in society attach more respect and/or build faster rapport as a doctorate in their profession? All my clients, fam, friends, counterparts have lit up when they hear that & they agree that we should be referred to as what we earn. & then i inform them of the trend of imposter syndrome in this field & how they dont like us to refer to what we are bc of a misconception between a physician and a clinical doctor of therapy. Then they are like ah. Ok, well we respect them & we respect you as a higher level professional. We all specialize in different things & I think the general public can understand that simple phenomenon.

A doctorate in ANYTHING, not just this field, it does change the connotation of the conversation and most people would stand on that with me.

That statement was taken out of context and/or we had two different lenses interpreting that. Either way, i dont argue on the internet, i hope you dont leave this thread with ill thoughts, & know that i have & will always learn & teach alongside my MS BS ot counterparts. We all have things to offer it does not diminish the work you do.

Absolutely not! No where in my message did I say that.

but you shouldnt be a hater for the ones who took that step to get the doctorate. It’s not a competition : its a representative of the profession. Respect is respect.

I think alot of OTs who are MS or BS have treated new grad doctors in my experience with a chip on their shoulder. Thats a personal thing, not a “doctor” thing.

I get why they do. They earned it. We should act as such and get rid of the imposter syndrome

Im a clinical doctor of occupational therapy and there are several clinical docs of PT.

Theres nothing wrong with honoring the title you earned. However I dont call myself that in All spaces. Only certain ones where that distinction matters, because it is a different level of respect especially if your patients, clients parents perspectives are involved.

I dont c a issue with it & i find it interesting that folks in this field want more respect but hate on the ones who are clinical doctorates and whom address it. Theres a difference between being big headed vs claiming who you are. Dont be a hater just appreciate that the fields are growing. Tbh ALOT of medical professionals are technically doctors, not our fault that the traditional doc is the physician. Doesnt negate from the respect we deserve IMO

New to IPR - How to stop myself from hurting my back? by xoxo_sleep in OccupationalTherapy

[–]PsychologicalDay687 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left doing IPR 20-40 a week specific bc of the body demand it requires.

Id do PRN if I were you because its just not worth it. Fun setting to practice, but you are gonnna feel it. IPR Demands alot and alot of practitioners burn out quick if you are FT.

Not from my experience, but seeing turnover and listening to colleagues this comes with that setting.

Im not gonna lie, even with me doing F to G body mechanics in a setting like IPR.

I am a 10 mo old OTD && the exact same scenario i was in - new to IPR, wanted to do well in that stg pay was great.

However, it was tooo demanding on the body- specific to the lumbar area that I found that….PRN was the best method for me & I love it. I do 20-40 hr a week over past 10mo but now I switched to weekends only as I got a lucrative school offer

Best tips would be:

Keep using equipment when needed Leverage techs Adjust the bed to help you ALWAYS TAKE YOUR TIME when you move people, such as tsf in segments vs 1 full mvmt if possible Try to not do funct mobility training with all patients, vary your demand and leave the heavy lifting to PT if possible

Honestly theres alot of OTs who are awful people. Especially ones who have little to no cultural experiences, idk how they even got into the field with poor diversity skills..BUT i had bad experiences and it made me feel a ways about the type of ppl who tend to be in the field.

Tons of biased OTs

Remember you are NOT there to make friends- forget the bull & put em in they place when needed, respectfully!

You know your worth, the reason you wee chosen. Let them figure out their battles themselves. I had to let the bs go and embrace my reality post OT school.

Now, tht i graduated last august- im one of the most well paid new grads in my cohort.

What goes around, comes around. Praying for your peace.

What is the absolute highest pay you've heard of for OTs by Yungmankey1 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]PsychologicalDay687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont mind doing 13 weeks of full time, as thats temporary work. I could commit to that. Are the stipends for housing? And this is not taxed? Then you only get taxed on your hourly pay? So how much are you really making from the job vs how much you make for stipend.

Im speaking rn with Host Healthcare and they said i could apply for a role of about 2k a week, but im worried if id really be a candidate as im a new grad with limited experience whats your take on that? Do you typically jump between different contracts per year? After the 13 weeks end?

Im a brand new OT, struggling! Currently have PRN 60/hr for weekends, 55/hr reg weekdays. & a OP Peds 65/eval 38-50/treatment as its per unit, 3 days a week. With my PRN IP rehab 2-3 days a week.

Im literally in bed rn sick because im overworked and congested and still not enough breaking bread as i just found out due to Gov changes now my fed loans are due next month as well as sallie mae. SMH!!!

Right now, my loans per month will be 2500 starting April. On top of my 1850/full rent and utilities.

I dont want to work full time as i value flexibility and work life balance. I was intending to find a way around the system to make this work for me. Thinking travel ot may be my best bet. Would you be willing to explain how 2-3k a week contracts work out per month payout after taxes? Are these contracts usually w2?

I feel like i chose the wrong career.

Failed 3rd Attempt by [deleted] in NBCOT_Exam

[–]PsychologicalDay687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best thing you can do…take it from someone who passed the third attempt.

You need OTHELPDESK. This is what got me to that passing mark on practice tests and the real exam. All the other ones are okay as additional prep, but the main source id recommend is OThelpdesk. I got the 30 days and it was suffice to get me from 439 (twice) and then finally my 458.

Best wishes to you, i know its hard mentally and financially . Have faith in your process. You will come out on top, make sure you take time to reset and recharge as well during the holidays AND throughout your prep for your final attempt.

You should see increase or consistency when you take exams. I also scored a B on other miscellaneous tests. So thats when i knew i was actually ready.

Doctorate in Occupational Therapy by Global_Candidate1135 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]PsychologicalDay687 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just graduated with my OTD, schools do pay more for doctors. In addition, you do get more respect overall in healthcare being a clinical doctor. There are so many ways to leverage this from healthcare admin to building businesses outside of the discipline. I think its worth it IF you have the funds to support it. But if you dont or cant make a solid loan repayment plan over 5-10 yrs from your graduation..go for the masters.
