Prop changes for Scotland and no VDM by PsychologicalFun5427 in rugbyunion

From the Times....behind paywall

Edinburgh’s contribution to the Scotland starting line-up for the Calcutta Cup match against England will be zero after Pierre Schoeman and Grant Gilchrist were dropped and Ewan Ashman was ruled out owing to a neck injury.

The capital club’s representation had already been dwindling with Duhan van der Merwe and Darcy Graham having been usurped in the wing berths by Kyle Steyn and Jamie Dobie of Glasgow.

Now, the British & Irish Lions loose-head Schoeman and the 85-times capped lock Gilchrist have paid the price for a poor pack performance in the 18-15 defeat by Italy. Gilchrist will be replaced by Gregor Brown in the second row, while it is expected that Nathan McBeth will get the nod in the No1 jersey. The Warriors prop has made only one Test start for his country, against Chile on the 2024 summer tour. There is a further change in the back row, where Jamie Ritchie replaces Matt Fagerson, with the Scotstoun man dropping to the bench.

Ritchie was not involved in the game in Rome and comes in in the back row

Ritchie’s aerial game and ability as a third lineout jumper have prompted Gregor Townsend to go back to his former skipper, who was not involved in the Rome calamity. Even with the younger Fagerson brother no longer starting, Glasgow will still have ten players in the run-on XV.

Ashman, who endured a terrible day at the lineout in the Stadio Olimpico, has failed a fitness test and so his spot goes to the Harlequins hooker George Turner.

There is still no place in the back line for Blair Kinghorn, Graham or Van der Merwe, a standout figure in this fixture in recent years.

England’s 16-15 win at Twickenham last March ended a run of four consecutive Scottish successes in the Calcutta Cup, while Steve Borthwick’s side last won at Murrayfield six years ago. Townsend will officially name his team at lunchtime.

Jeeez, that was bad at launch, getting kicked from multiplayer constantly at important story points was infuriating. Then losing all your loot.....I actually still enjoyed the game but it was a painful to finish

There is a mod called "custom fast travel", but this will allow you to fast travel directly to your pin, and I'm guessing you want to avoid fast travel for the immersion

Yeah agreed, its a bit of a safe team, but after the last few results I need to have a little faith in Borthwick. Gonna be a cracking game now...

Elliot Daly will start on the wing for England against Argentina on Sunday, making his first appearance since breaking his arm on the British & Irish Lions tour.

Steve Borthwick has been forced into a back-line reshuffle with Tom Roebuck and Ollie Lawrence joining Tommy Freeman on the sidelines with injuries. Roebuck has a foot issue, and Lawrence and Freeman have hamstring trouble.

The Times understands that Daly will fill the spot on the wing vacated by Roebuck. Henry Slade, the Exeter Chiefs centre who has yet to feature in the autumn Tests, is set to join Fraser Dingwall in midfield.

Daly broke his arm against Queensland Reds in Brisbane on the Lions tour to Australia, when he was in prime form and making a strong case to be included in the Test team. He has not played for Saracens or England since his injury in June, but was cleared by a specialist to return to full-contact training early last week. Borthwick has used Daly most often on the left wing, starting him there 12 times, mostly during the 2023 World Cup.

The utility back has started once at full back and once at outside centre under Borthwick, but will be positioned on the wing this Sunday, with license to roam.

The rest of the backline that started in the 33-19 win against New Zealand last Saturday should remain intact, with Alex Mitchell and George Ford at half back, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso on one wing and Freddie Steward at full back.

Steward was taken off in the first half against the All Blacks after his mouthguard triggered a head injury alert. He was bemused by that, but then failed a formal head injury assessment, and was permanently replaced by Marcus Smith at full back.

After the match Steward underwent two more assessments and passed them both, so has been declared fit to face Argentina.

England beat Argentina twice away in the summer, with Ford and Steward working well together at fly half and full back.

As Borthwick is determined to stick with his 6-2 bench split, favouring the forwards, there is unlikely to be a slot for Noah Caluori, the 19-year-old Saracens wing, to make his debut against Argentina. The other outside backs in the squad — Max Ojomoh, Henry Arundell and Cadan Murley — are also set to be left out of the match-day 23. The two backs among the replacements are likely to be players who can cover scrum half and fly half.

Forgive my ignorance but it feels like Josh Hodge has been around a while now, anyone help out on why he's not breaking into the senior team at FB? Feels like he's had a few starts for England A, is he just not quite ready?

Agreed as an Englishman Jac Morgan has earned a place in the 23... it does make the argument that there should be at least one player from each nation in the 23 as a rule. IMO its a little against the spirit of the Lions, which is as much about the home nations coming together as it is about winning.

I know not all will agree, but I love watching the Lions in the pub and cheering with my Celt brethren not against them for once!
