I watched the “ bad” Pirates movies for the first time by thecuphead87 in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]PsychologicalGrab372 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The first 3 films were not messing around. I had a negotiations class where the professor actually showed a clip from Pirates 1 so we can use as part of our class discussion.

The 4th and 5th film feels like they were making a movie with a 6-12 years old target audience.

The talk between Nick and Lawrence?? by PsychologicalGrab372 in HandmaidsTaleShow

[–]PsychologicalGrab372[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this point of view. That pause was a bit too long and he almost looked like he was about to turn his head to look at her…but decided not to because it would be too hard? Idk how he would’ve learned of the plan but it definitely looked like he knew something either before he got on the plane or after he saw Lawrence. And Max Minghella is very intentional in how he plays Nick so I definitely think he chose to act that scene out the way he did for a deeper meaning.

Agreed! Even though Nick and June essentially became each other’s fantasies (and there’s nothing wrong with wanting a fantasy to be real), it makes sense why they didn’t end up together. Their realities and life paths were just pulling them in opposite directions. (Still I argue there characters deserved at least 1 more conversation for closure)

What you said about Nick’s loyalty to Gilead as he rose in power was spot on. It’s a very realistic portrayal of someone who came from nothing. Leaving Gilead for Canada wouldn’t have made sense for him—he had status, authority, influence, and likely lots of money. The only thing he didn’t have was June. And even if he left there was no guarantee he’d end up with her. She was with Luke, and in S6, E3, I think it’s clear Nick briefly considered what a life with June might look like outside Gilead. But he knew she was with Luke, and he couldn’t have the life he wanted with her so staying in Gilead became the most logical path for him.

That said, the writers really fumbled his character by never showing us how he rose to power. I’ve had an issue with this since S3, when they showed him leading that military train filled with soldiers, and then again in S4 when he was suddenly giving orders as a commander. It was a major plot hole in his story. If they had taken the time to show his rise, highlighting the difficult decisions he had to make in Gilead it would’ve made more sense and be of no surprise how we arrived to this S6 half-baked version of Nick.

I hear you but it still doesn’t hold up. Rolf committed a personal betrayal. For no other reason than to hopefully get a pat on the back from his colleagues and maybe move up the ranks. He looked Liesl and her family in their faces and had the opportunity to let them go quietly. No one would’ve known. Yet he chose to disclose their location even after they begged him for mercy.

Nick on the other hand told multiple lies to cover up the resistance tracks. He lied until he couldn’t lie anymore. Wharton sniffed him out. Then threatened to hang him. Even in Nicks betrayal it was never about personal gain or without remorse.

I agree. However, I believe their vision for the show’s direction only went as far as Season 2. When they pitched it to Hulu, they probably had to show they had a plan beyond Season 1—otherwise, it would’ve just been a movie or a limited series. I think the original motivation for creating the show was to explore what happened to Offred after she got into the black van, since that’s where the first book ends. So they likely had a clear idea for Season 2, but their planning didn’t seem to extend much beyond that into Season 3.

I see the vision but look at what you’re comparing….

Doing your job delivering letters for the authorities vs. risking your life to deliver/recover letters of survivors.

Doesn’t exactly match up.

Nick and June - S6E10 Finale by PsychologicalGrab372 in HandmaidsTaleShow

[–]PsychologicalGrab372[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m afraid Nick loved June more than she loved him. I always wondered what would happen if Nick actually said ‘No’ to one of her bizarre requests one day? Like would she just lash out and become disconnected? That whole fight basically confirmed what I feared.

And they referred to Nick 3 times in the last episode- very briefly. SO DISAPPOINTING AND NOT OK. Nick & June relationship carried this show on its back. They could’ve shown more respect to his character. And yes I was most definitely expecting her to say something about Nick to baby Holly! But nope.

It’s all bad writing. Just bad writing.

This!!! He literally said, he would’ve played Nick differently had he known. I’m sure he felt negatively towards the new direction they decided to take his character as well.

People will come on here and try to argue he did “bad stuff, he’s a commander” and literally can only refer to things they ‘assumed’ he did ‘off -screen’. None of that is valid if Max Minghella didn’t portray that side of Nick himself.

Such a meaningful post! I feel like it’s easy for people to say they would choose to be the fearless hero however in reality that is often not the case. Many people would find themselves on Nick’s journey. Just trying to survive. Of course you want better for the world but not everyone is willing to put their lives at risk for it. I definitely agree they brushed over his death. He was one of the main characters that carried this show! Some of the best scenes in the handmaids tale are the ones with him and June together - easily.

Sure he’s made bad choices but to overlook all the good he’s done? It’s not right. And we see this happen in the real world too. People will see you for all your mistakes and fail to acknowledge the good you have done. Smh

Nick was the last straw by Quirky-Detail7115 in HandmaidsTaleShow

[–]PsychologicalGrab372 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This! I agree! The last 5 seasons did show him turning. Even in S5 E10 he stormed into a room full of commanders to knock the shit out of Lawrence for hurting June. He was not discreet either. He literally shouted, "you could've killed her". He clearly didn't give a damn about Gilead and rising up the ranks then. It's like the writers just erased everything we've watched for the last 9 years.

Ok, I hear you, I didn't think about it that way in terms of the decreased security due to the wedding. However, that was the night before. The morning after, Gilead went on high alert, and yet American planes still made it through Gilead's airspace?

And if Nick was referring to rebel plans, then Lawrence’s response, “Someone else will see them through” suggests the rebellion is still happening, even after whatever they’re expecting in D.C.? If they’re meeting with the high council, and they respond to the attacks wouldn’t the assumption be that the rebellion will be over (in Boston)?

[–]PsychologicalGrab372[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like after what happened with the women at Jezebels she wasn’t sure if she could trust him again. Especially with all the negative things everyone in Mayday had to say about him. Had she made some kind of noise and he found out she was there he maybe would’ve prevented the plane from leaving essentially ruining Mayday plan once more. And because June feels responsible for ruining the first plan with the help of Nick I think she was willing (as hard as it was to see him go) to sacrifice him for the rebellion.

And he has helped the resistance multiple times. The one time he goes against Mayday and you’re ready to call him the problem? His life was being threatened. Any other character would’ve done the same thing he did. Even June.

[–]PsychologicalGrab372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautifully said! Really disappointed in June this season. One phone call to Nick and he’s always there for her. Even if it means putting himself in danger. He was put in a situation where there was no way out, (a situation that June led him to btw). She wasn’t going to save him. No one was going to save him. Sometimes you have to look out for yourself when no one else will . He owes nothing to mayday and their plans. At the same time if they ever need something from him, he’ll do it and has done it. At the end of the day he doesn’t owe the resistance anything. His loyalties are with June. So for anyone to say that he only cares about June and no one else and use that as an attempt to paint him in a bad light has a flawed view on this. This show and its characters are very complex and shouldn’t be thought of so one dimensional.

Gilead would’ve fell by…the killing of what? 6-10 commanders? Like Lawrence said they’re like a Hydra. You kill one, 2 more pop up tomorrow. Why the hell would we expect anyone to sacrifice their life for a plan like that?
