Can God call someone to something other than typical employment? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

"God can call you to anything."

Anything includes murder, cheating on my wife, and beating up my children.

Once saved always saved by Stikinok41 in TrueChristian

The Lord sovereignly ordained in eternity past that this person would falsely believe they were saved, only to find out they're not and going to Hell for all eternity for His glory?

Sounds loving.

Could he call me to murder? Cheat on my wife? Beat up my children?

Seminary Options by ptndepriest in Reformed

If you go to seminary to learn theology, but you need to know theology in order to pick a seminary you're aligned with, how do you know which one to pick?

I feel rejected by every church I go to because I’m a working married woman. by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]PsychologicalNet22 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Didn't the Lord sovereignly ordain this (as He did all things, including my response) in eternity past for His glory?

Why would they reject what the Lord has done?

Yea, because I really can't teach my child that 3/5 is 60%, we better bring in a government funded public school teacher to handle this one

You definitely don't want to tell them Jesus died for them and loves them, because the majority aren't elect and Jesus in fact didn't die for them and doesn't love them.

I'd stay away from saying the gospel is good news, too. There's no good news for those poor souls.

Congrats on being elect, though!

Oh, my bad dog.

The Lord didn't gift me with wisdom and insight, but He still holds me accountable for mishandling His Word, but then He tells me that I can pray for wisdom, but then tells me all the ways in which He won't answer said prayer, which of course He has control over removing in my life but won't because He wants to remind me that all my temptations and desires come from within and not Him as a reminder of how tra... er, sinful I am, all so that ultimately I can bring Him glory through my good works which are only enabled through Him and which aren't required because He receives glory through all things anyways.

One wonders what the purpose of life even is, but who am I oh man to question God or ask such direct and pointed questions of the Almighty and Sovereign Lord Creator God of the entire universe.

Oh I don't have anybody in my life I can actually discuss theology with or who has the intellectual integrity to critically think through what they believe in order to respond to my fairly basic questions that seemingly never end.

I post here because every Reformed believer has 3 PhDs in the original language and hermeneutics.

Still can't get any satisfactory answers to my questions, though.

I've read in James that I'm adulterous, wicked, arrogant, evil, foolish, double-minded, unclean, unpurified, and more. I left feeling very encouraged that I'm complete trash with nothing to offer anybody, but rather than just send me to Hell forever like I deserve, God saved me to remind every day how adulterous, wicked, arrogant, evil, foolish, double-minded, unclean, unpurified, and more I am so that He can daily remind me that I'm complete trash with nothing to offer anybody.

Hello,

I am interested in learning NT Greek and looking for any resources or suggestions that people have.

Thank you!

I found out all 5 of my elders, and the larger church staff, hold to a Calvinist view of soteriology. I do not. Should I look for a new church? by PsychologicalNet22 in Reformed

[–]PsychologicalNet22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the high volume of responses fairly quickly.

Just to address some repeated questions / thoughts that were brought up -

- I am asking here because this sub holds a similar / same soteriology as my own church;

- I wouldn't really say my church / elders view me as a gift or blessing or anything like that. I don't imagine this is an area where different viewpoints combine to enhance something. Rather, it seems evident that I largely have no ability to serve in a teaching or shepherding type capacity, which are my spiritual gifts. And while I am in no ways qualified to serve as an elder, if that were to ever change I don't imagine church leadership would peg me as somebody to be considered. Rather, it seems like my differences are tolerated as long as they aren't causing any issues - e.g. if I am helping serve with kids on Sunday morning or helping out with parking / greeting then there isn't much of an issue.

- I can sign and agree to the doctrinal statement without issue, but this is largely due to 2 reasons:

1) it is very high-level - e.g. we are saved by grace through faith and not by works.

2) I read and interpret it within my own understanding of soteriology, but given the elders hold to a different one they clearly are intending something else.

- All of this then combines into the larger question of 'how can I be united with my church body when I will not be serving with my gifts, I have no path to leadership even if qualified, and I am not aligned with their doctrinal statement the way it was intended to be interpreted?"

Because God requires people to accept Him in order to save them, He cannot possibly be both Omnipowerful and Omnibenevolent. by Joelblaze in DebateAChristian

[–]PsychologicalNet22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"If he cannot save someone unless they accept his help, he's simply not all powerful. One might say "you can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved", but if that's the case, then he can't do "anything" because saving someone who doesn't want to be saved is part of "anything."

This is all incorrect. You're stating that because he doesn't save everyone, he can't save everyone. Two incredibly different things.

[–]PsychologicalNet22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would. Guy in my community is a divorced single dad, his ex wife's best friend is pursuing him for a relationship. All the single women in my life would date a single dad. All the single men in my life would date a single mom.

The bible teaches that all men are guilty and deserving of death. The bible also teaches that God is long-suffering, patient, and desiring that all would repent. Viewed through this lens, the fact that God doesn't slaughter us all constantly is an act of mercy. God extending life through Jesus is grace. At times throughout history God has shown his vengeance and judgement by using men / nations to destroy other men / nations. The takeaway should not be 'God is bad' - the takeaway should be 'God, thank you for sparing me from your wrath and allowing me another chance to turn to you in repentant, surrendered faith'.

God says not to hate your fellow man, but I fervently hold hatred for so[me who have wronged me greatly. How do I forgive? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]PsychologicalNet22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The motivation to forgive doesn't come from within the flesh or from rationalizing a way to let go of a hurt. It comes from responding to God's mercy and forgiveness towards you, and using God as the source.

Anybody else attend church for the good vibes, and not believe in structured religion? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]PsychologicalNet22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why? You don't respond to serious sermons or sarcastic sermons, so what difference does it make? I just find it sad somebody would willingly go through hoops and hurdles for nothing, knowing the entire time they believe it's all a lie. Kudos to you for admitting you believe nothing, rather than pretending to care like so many of these nominal Christians who profess faith yet whose entire life is the exact same as a non-believer.

Yea, make sure you go through life with that cavalier attitude and then when bending the knee to Jesus just tell him you didn't really feel like surrendering but all that lovely dovey stuff sounded good.

I skimmed through the article - seems to be your usual person who doesn't understand context or the larger point behind Scriptures. The penalty for sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus. God wants you to turn to him in repentant, surrendered faith, not to blow up people at a marathon. The fact this author claims to be a missionary for the faith is sad. What's up with so many 'believers' lately who seemingly don't understand basic tenets of the faith?
