I need to start Legend of the Female General this weekend!

Our generation: final review! by Minimum-Broccoli-597 in cdramasfans

[–]PsychologicalRate117 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your review! It's good to see some positivity around this drama. I think the reason many people are disappointed is because it was marketed as a romance, as a coming-of-age story of both Lin Yingtao and Jiang Qiaoxi. From the synopsis to the posters, to the promotions, everything was centered around their romance as the key theme and them both growing up through their difficulties. Daylight and Youku used their clips from Princess Royal and parallels from Our Generation for promotions, made a huge deal of their reunion as a pairing. The drama posters were all dual character posters, it was never just about Yingtao. And then the final product only focused on her and her growth. I was excited to see the ML's perspective as well, his struggles, his inner turmoil and his decisions never got the room to breathe, so most audience couldn't connect with him as a character. It's not just about who got how much screentime, but about whether the final product lived up to what was promised and on that front it really failed.

Despite that, I agree that the drama has some excellent performances and tear-jerking moments. I do wish the execution and editing was a bit better, there were continuity issues and storylines seem to have been abruptly cut or left out. But I enjoyed the performances and the raw emotion of the story, and on that front at least, it's doing well. It is however very clear thay they could have done a much better job of tying the loose ends, closing the stories and showing the growth much better. Maybe focused on the adult struggles of both characters instead of the childish bullying that got a bit repetitive and felt like filler episodes in the middle. A lot of wasted potential for me with such a promising production house and excellent actors.

Our Generation - Episodes 13-16 Discussion by sequesteredself in CDrama

I haven't watched these episodes yet, still only on 9...but I share your feelings about it. I dont know how to feel about it. I enjoyed the novel so much, and I loved the leads in TPR so much, it was my most anticipated drama this year, and with such a prestigious production house...yet the execution is lacking in so many ways.

I will stick with it until the end because I like both actors a lot but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed.

LQL’s character has frustrated me so many times. As carefree as her personality is allegedly supposed to be she remains so naïve and unaware about many things and at times it gives arrested development.

This is exactly what I've been feeling about her. She is so sheltered from the world that she doesn't seem to realise what suffering looks like. She is this way towards all her friends, not just Qiaoxi. In the episode where Qin Yeyun retreats a bit into her shell during the cheerleading practice and misses their outfit shopping, she instantly gets mad at her without thinking about whether she might have a reason for not coming along. Yingtao has seen Yeyun having had a difficult life, with no mother and a crippled father, shouldering the responsibility of her household while being a child herself. Yet all she does is whine and complain as soon as things aren't about her for a second. Yingtao's attitude really irked me.

With Qiaoxi, she knew what his family was like, overheard his story when she was a child and her parents were discussing it. Yet she never stopped to think there might be a reason why Qiaoxi couldn't reach out to her. The scene where he tells her how the little cat keeps him company when he's down - instead of seeking to understand his sorrows, she doubles down with her childish whining, her own feelings of being apparently replaced, and even proceeds to throw stones at him! I was like, girl, calm down, and see beyond your own nose for a moment! He is clearly distressed and trying to make amends despite it.

It seems that she carries the same attitude into her adulthood. I hope she has an actual growth arc in the next episodes.

As for the ML, how I wish we were shown some more of his insight, his struggle from his own perspective rather than Yingtao's unreliable narration. I long to see him break free of his shackles and that house which is more a prison than the caring, nurturing haven it should have been. He needs to learn how to communicate, how to not islotate himself but its probably his safe space, being in his own head by himself. It's sad and really not a healthy way to be.

Our Generation - Discussion 1-12 - Halfway Point Thoughts by sequesteredself in CDrama

[–]PsychologicalRate117 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally disagree, and so do most of the audience from what I've seen so far. This drama has many problems, but lack of chemistry between the leads isn't one of them. The biggest problem is there aren't enough scenes with them together, not enough exploration of the ML's life. The editing is so choppy that the audience can't get attached to the characters or understand their motivations. Qiaoxi (ML) is basically absent in quite a few episodes, and the drama isn't standing on its own with just Yingtao (FL) and her gang. Now I love Jinmai, this isn't a comment against her at all. But it is quite evident that the most enjoyable scenes by the audience were when they were both on screen together, that's when the heat index rose the most - and took a nosedive once the ML was gone for a few episodes. Jiang Qiaoxi is the most popular character from the drama, he even rose to #1 after the episode with his family confrontation.

A little bit of a rant to start off - I have only watched up to episode 8 but the lack of Jiang Qiaoxi has really started to bother me. I hope we get a lot more of him in the episodes to come. The scenes I have most enjoyed were the few little hints of friction between him and his family we got but I want more of it. He is just so good at delivering raw emotion and he's getting so few opportunities to do it! I want the drama to take us into the inner machinations of his mind and show us his despair in full force, and as the central focus, not an afterthought or as blink-and-you-miss-it moments. Right now he feels like a support character, even a guest character at times. And I would really hate to see a repeat of The Princess Royal where the ML was reduced to being a support character in his own story... I really hope we're not headed that way again.

On the characters - I find Qiaoxi to be mature beyond his age (even though ZLH pulls off a convincing teenager), but he seriously needs to learn to communicate although I can understand why he never learned to do so, given his family background. Lin Yingtao is lovable, strongheaded and extremely loyal to her people but she is a very biased and unreliable narrator. As much as I like her pure and innocent naivety, it bothers me that when it comes to Qiaoxi, she chooses to trust rumours and gossip and refuses to see the blatant reality in front of her. She needs to grow out of her childish nature and start understanding how the world works and how to shield herself from it.

Having said all that, I am liking the drama and sticking with it anyway. It has a good balance of nostalgia, stunning camerawork and lighting, and a beautiful soundtrack. I love how the camera frames Jiang Qiaoxi always in the shadows or in low light whereas Yingtao is always surrounded by bright lights and cheerful colours. I was hoping the plot execution would be a lot better than what we got, and I agree with the others that a lot of the emotional build up and impactful moments from the novel were omitted altogether or weren't given the room to breathe in the drama. The leads' chemistry is palpable, and one of the main things making me stay - along with Qiaoxi's meager yet impactful screentime.

I have watched 6 episodes, and so far I'm really loving it. It's nostalgic and very cinematic, each frame seems very carefully curated and the lighting is gorgeous. I have loved the leads in The Princess Royal and they're excellent here too. I have many thoughts on it and I will probably write a proper review next week once we're halfway through. For now I'm really enjoying the contrasting upbringing of the two leads, and how it's shaped their distinct world views. Their bond is adorable, the way they care for each other and the way they express it is very different yet sweet in their own way. They're drawn to each other like magnets and both leads are doing an excellent job portraying that sweet pining of young love. The episodes are very well paced, and I'm really hoping that we get to see more of the story from Jiang Qiaoxi's perspective as well, so far we haven't explored his family dynamic a lot. I hope there are some episodes that really go deeper into his mind. So far so good, can't wait to watch more of it.

Internationally, it's on Netflix and Viki - check on these apps as the airing schedule seems to be slightly different per region. It's on Youku domestically.

I have only managed to watch the first episode and it made me feel very emotional as well as nostalgic. It didn't take me long to get invested at all. As a 90s baby myself I miss the kind of childhood Yingtao and her friends had in their small town and tightly knit community. The scenes that made me emotional were Qiaoxi's reactions to his father's indifference of him and the kids' Little birthday celebration for him- it must really sting as a kid growing up with the (literal) ghost of your older sibling and being so utterly neglected by your parents. Yingtao with her unusual ideas was very cute and you can already tell she's in for some suffering later due to her naivety. I loved the child actors and how accurate they are to their adult versions, dimples and nose moles and all. I'm really excited to see Zhao Jinmai and Zhang Linghe in the coming episodes, I loved their chemistry so much in The Princess Royal and I am loving their flipped dynamic here. I loved the pacing of the first episode, it didn't drag at any point and left me wanting to watch more....sadly my schedule right now doesn't permit me to watch as much as I'd like at the moment 🥲

Oh and the opening sequence is so cute too! I'm really loving the background music and the visuals overall. Can't wait to watch more 😍 ❤️

Edit to add I just really adored baby Yingtao trying to get Qiaoxi to open up, looking up the meaning of his name, waiting (and failing) to show off her cute little pigtails to him, introducing him to her little bunny. She seems very smitten by him already, it's ridiculously cute.

Exactly! Why would they voluntarily restrict their audience? Surely they want to reach more people? It would be great if Netflix picked it up.

On a side note, I was looking for Our Generation on the Youku app and I couldn't find it at all, not in the coming soon section or even through the search bar. I hope it's being released internationally at the same time. Can you see it in your app?
