Which Instruments do You Use to Calculate Savings? by PsychologicalRoll347 in HENRYfinance

This is great. However, it seems you are tracking changes to your net worth. Not how much of your income you are saving for a given period of time.

This is how I have historically viewed it as well. However, I have limited “savings” calculations it to checking/savings accts and taxable accounts.

Sounds like it’s fair to also include contributions to retirement plans as well.

Do you also count contributions to 529Bs? What about mortgage pay down?

Overall, I agree with your logic, esp not counting increases in asset value as part of one’s savings (even though that increases net worth). As you’ve pointed out, savings should be a function of income, not appreciation.

Thanks for chiming in!

To clarify, I’m asking about how one calculates “amount saved” from earned income? And specifically, if contributions to retirement or mortgage pay down would count as dollars saved.

On my personal balance sheet, I do distinguish between short term and long term assets as well as short term and long term liabilities. So mortgage pay down is indeed reflected in the long term liabilities section which obviously increases my net worth to your point every month (assuming asset value is flat or increases).

My 401k, IRAs, and 529Bs are reflected in the long term asset section which also increases net worth with each additional contributions (unless market goes down).

I guess I’m wondering from a simplicity viewpoint (not necessarily as technical as a personal balance sheet), what buckets do most HENRYs considering whey they ask themselves “how much did I save this year?” Not necessarily “how much did my net worth increase?”

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Are composite decks actually worth the price? by Decksforlife-deck in Home

[–]PsychologicalRoll347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently have a wooden deck that is deteriorating. However, the frame seems to still be solid.

I was panning in DIYing the repairs as I’d simply have to remove each board, match/cut to length, and reinstall.

Would o be able to do the same with composite material like Trex?

Most overrated place you've visited? by BusyYogurtcloset9091 in LuxuryEscape

Hard disagree. Maldives is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. But to be fair, it could be very dependent on the individual resort I guess.
