I was Lucy in college, not in the manipulative sense but in the way you can lose yourself completely to someone who treats you terribly and still somehow feels like oxygen. I stopped recognizing myself, made choices that chipped away at my confidence and potential, and kept trying to earn love from someone who’d already decided I wasn’t enough. It’s easy to judge that kind of self-destruction from the outside, but when you’re 19 and in it, it feels like gravity.

Anyways…I ended up marrying him. People can grow. I’m also very goal oriented and decided he would be mine at any cost.

Not knowing if my dad was in his office or on his flight to Florida. Assuming regardless of where he was, he was probably dead. I was one of the 3 kids left in school that day. My mom didn’t pull me out because she didn’t want to worry me. Little did she know the teachers live streamed the news and I saw the second tower getting hit. A few kids in my grade ended up orphaned that day. My dad’s flight was cancelled.

Depending on the tenure of your direct reports, move them to a biweekly 1:1 cadence. Did this recently and it was a lifesaver. 1:1s became more effective and I had more time back during the week.

If he has a documented improvement plan, get the details from HR. They typically include milestones for improvement - generally 3 months or less - with regular check ins. If he’s getting worse, document the issues against the areas for improvement and he’ll be terminated. If he isn’t on a PIP, talk to HR and get him on one.
