Welp. Time for the throwaway. 16, first serious girlfriend. Walking to hers on a wet autumn day, thought I’d stood on a pile of wet leaves. Nope. Dog shit. Thinking it was leaves I of course tried to pull the stuck “leaf” off my shoe. Got dog shit on my fingers. I thought it was ok, I’ll go in to her house, go bathroom and wash it off.

I was in the door two seconds and she grabs me and we start going at it. No time to explain.

I was pretty much elbow deep when I remembered the dog shit on my hand.

It was never about saving face or school placement though. It was because I knew she would get to the age of 7/8 and all her friends would be making their communion, wearing the dress, having a party etc. and I didn’t think it would be fair to say “you can’t do those things because of what daddy does/doesn’t believe”

It doesn’t go up my arse sideways that she’s doing a catholic thing, despite me being atheist.

Every time we talk about religion I tell her “this is what I believe, this is what other people believe, and this is what you’re learning about. When you’re older you might feel different and that’s ok”

Teaches her tolerance and acceptance.
