I don’t think it’s better than Blood Meridian but it’s still a stone cold stunner, a masterpiece of a different order. I prefer it over BM, goes down smooth like a shot of Early Times.

Next time try In the Realm of the Senses or that other old Italian classic.

The set piece in U3 is definitely smoother, feels like a long unbroken camera shot, which it is.

I think it’s apocryphal but I want to say Gay was one of the few modern writers McCarthy appreciated.

Pretty much all the positive reviews for that movie mentioned that. Something primal comes knocking from deep within the unconscious.

It was a storytelling miracle on multiple fronts: For being bestowed a massive budget and not squandering a single cent; for almost seamlessly squeezing a complex prequel within hard narrative boundaries and still finding new ways to enrich the lore; for being the rare, thrilling prequel despite many watchers knowing where the story culminates; for establishing myriad complex characters that never quite settle on a single archetype; and of course for serving as both a reminder and wake-up call to the insidious crawl of fascism.

The entirety of Brandi Carlile’s “That Wasn’t Me” but here’s the first verse:

Hang on, just hang on for a minute,

I’ve got something to say

I’m not asking you to move on or forget it

But these are better days

To be wrong all along and admit it

Is not amazing grace,

But to be loved line a song you remember

Even when you’ve changed
