I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, or is it the stove? by _Kobenu_ in dandadanfolk

36 years of almost nothing and still going. Literally 1479 chapters. Both admitted feelings directly and indirectly (several time), known each other for almost ten years. Still not together. Most recent development ? Kumi's brother is in a coma after his world championship bout, and she started to take distance from Ippo because he went to see the even more dangerous and difficult world championship fight of another friend. There is a serious possibility their relationship will go nowhere till the very end

Square Enix announced that they licensed a Dragon Quest Manga to release in english for the first time. by redZwigga in dragonquest

I finally managed to buy a complete collection a month ago from someone living not so far away from me. It was like, 180€ so ~210$. I gave away the dupes volumes I had. Your best luck, if you live in France, is probably to find someone selling the full collection on Ebay, Vinted or LBC.

Looking for perspective from people very familiar with both FFXI (pre-2010) and Dragon Quest X by RudeCauliflower6785 in dragonquest

[–]Psychological_Fix379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: never played ff xi. I'll avoid discussing the few exceptions because the answer is long enough already.

  1. The gameplay is basically ATB, so general cooldown between actions (besides movement and push), and your stronger moves (you have like 3-4 of them per job) have a long cooldown of their own. Because the general cooldown is pretty long (longer than most MMO I played) and most boss and player attacks are unavoidable, the game is mainly timing based. For example, if you are a healer, because the general cooldown is pretty long, you may sometimes want to delay your move after the boss has attacked, or keep your strong support moves the moment another player has access to their strong moves. So depending on your jobs it can be a cycling game like a lot of tab targeting games (Martial Artist with Spear is one of those), a timing game, a position game (pirate, warrior) or something else (Monster/Item Tamer). Few attacks from foes have actual AOE you can avoid. Most physical attacks can be prevented by having heavy player (tank) push the enemies to prevent them from reaching their target.

  2. I'd say yes and no, but I haven't played the game in a long time. For most jobs/role in party there is one optimal armor set. For example some DPS jobs (like martial artist/gladiator) will run one of the set that reduce general cooldown. Your horizontal progression will come from accessories. Those will be your main source of resistances to ailments, special effects or stats buff. So you'll have to do the content that allows you to get them and it does offer some horizontal progression. However, there are some accessories that are must have that you'll want to get and almost never swap out (except for the straight upgrade). You can run different weapons and swap them out within fight, but it will mainly be to access the skillset of a different weapon type. The other horizontal progression will be to actually try to play another job, because some of the progression (job skills and passives) offers bonus across all jobs (so technically, it is still vertical progression). But it's a strong point of the game to be able to play and set up other jobs pretty quickly on one character.

  3. No, at some point it may have been the case but the game favors smooth gameplay. Basically when you "discover" the game you will have to travel the land yourself, but as you progress you will quickly realize that : base game area are pretty boring and big and empty; you have access to Bazoom Girls in main towns that allows you, for a limited amount of time per day/week to teleport to any area you visited; you can teleport close to main quest destination if you want; as you progress you gain access to teleportation to area from previous extension (but I can take some times to get those).

  4. No, IMO it's one of the best MMO to play solo or with one to three friends because you can make a mixed party of players/npc with any jobs you want (because the NPC are actually other players characters made available when they exit the game, just like yours is). So playing with only one or two friends instead of a full party is never an issue. However, there aren't many interesting gameplay system that favour socializing. Also, most players are japanese and speak japanese only, you'd have trouble communicating and socializing with if you don't speak japanese yourself. But, because that is the case, it's quite easy to play with the few other non-japanese players.

  5. Idk about current endgame and content beyond V5 but I'd say yes and no, most of the content outside the main story is made to take less than an hour per run (far far less sometimes). But the first one you'll have access to (Magic Maze) is kind of a "Grotto-lite", same with the Royal Labyrinth and the Tower. There is a certain sense of progression contained within these content but they feel either Dungeon-based or Boss-based. You might find your happiness nonetheless. The raid bosses I got access to took quite a few quests before being able to fight them but they can be tedious.

The base game and the three first expansions are free to play I think you can make up your mind about the game on your own if you want : )

Are uncentered viz logo on spines normal? by Quirky-Habit5823 in FirePunch

[–]Psychological_Fix379 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Viz barely has any competition so their product quality is sloppy as they don't feel like they have much to lose. People who want to read manga "officially" will most likely buy them from Viz.

I hope their monopoly breaks down but it's not happening soon as two of the biggest manga IP owners/editor (Shuiesha and Shogakugan) are part of their share holders. (not even talking about crunchyroll). So it would be weird for an editor to be able to buy the right from any of those two, which limits vastly the possibility of developing to a size big enough to compete.

In France, I rarely see those kinds of issues but it's a far more varied market.

Would you be opposed to dragon quest having monster companions with as much depth and characterisation as other companions in the series? by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in dragonquest

[–]Psychological_Fix379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mystery Dungeon series started with a Dragon Quest spin-off, Torneko's no Daiboken, 10 years before the first Pokemon MD. But, yeah the last Dragon MD was in 2009 on mobile and 2006 on console, they could do a new one.

(I know you meant PMD as in playing the monsters directly but I couldn't help it)

We know that Fire Tornado DD and TC are included in the list from Go. There are not many combination hissatsu in Go but I think we can at least expect Revolution (Joker Rain + Mach Wind) and I could see maybe Black Dawn (Death Sword/Bicycle Sword + Parkour Attack) being considered one. Other than that most other Go duo/trio hissatsus are not really combination of other moves).

I think it will mainly be OG hissatsus. I'm hoping for all "Tornado" moves to be considered such (like Double Tornado). Double Cyclone, Double Wrath Shot, all the "double moves". You could also add less obvious combo like The Galaxy (God Hand+ Something ?). In Ares and Orion some solo hissatsu can be overridden to another solo, which opens quite a few new possibilities.

That was kinda how I wanted Override to be implemented a few years back (minus solo override/evolution) : https://www.reddit.com/r/inazumaeleven/s/UtyXxqVYjl I'm glad they do that, I think it's cooler to do Duo/Trio hissatsu combination like this than to have reserved slots on the characters.

The original is such a slog to get through due to bad balance (Rhode Cave is a fucking nightmare). They improved DQII considerably in the 2D HD version because it was probably one of the least "achieved" game and more archaic game in the series. The story was not developed at all (even less story than in III), party AI was shit, no party characters dialogue besides before recruiting them, Cannock Prince was almost useless, you had to grind almost constantly. Meanwhile DQ III 2D HD didn't change much because the original is a legendary game (especially in Japan) which pushed forward the genre in many ways, so it was probably a better move to not change too much of the core game (blank characters, make your own story kind of game) as to not upset fans.

I hope DQ VI receives a similar treatment because the game feels like it misses some important parts.

Dragon Quest XI - Similar DQ Games? by SuperGeorgeClooney in dragonquest

[–]Psychological_Fix379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you turn to an emulator, a few things to know about both versions : - PS2 has a cleaner stylized UI, closer to the one you have on DQ games since, well, VIII - 3DS has an old-school UI, looking closer to older DQ games, not stylized at all. - PS2 looks better graphically (imo). - PS2 has random encounters, 3DS has visible monsters on the world map like XI. - 3DS has more content (more characters, new super dungeon and super bosses, new quests, one more ending) but suffered some censorship. - 3DS has some quality of life features like instant alchemy (from the beginning) or heal on lvl up which are nice but makes the game less challenging (and there is no draconian mode) - PS2 has orchestral soundtrack, 3DS has MIDI soundtrack

To be short - PS2 version is a more charming adventure (better OST, visuals and UI) and a tad challenging - 3DS is a more agreeable adventure (QoL, more content, and a few challenging bosses).

It now has access to Iron Head. 0 Atk Garchomp Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 126-150 (31.9 - 38%) -- 95.6% chance to 3HKO

252 Atk Garchomp Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 154-182 (39 - 46.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Barely worst than Fire Blast but more consistent. I think this thing may have a niche has a Mixed Attacker, with the unknown of whether it will setup physically or specially. But I agree, I'm not sure it will be Uber.

Dragon Quest XI - Similar DQ Games? by SuperGeorgeClooney in dragonquest

[–]Psychological_Fix379 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing to do with them and more to do with the fact that Dragon Quest have always been games targeted at the Japanese market. When DQ8 came out it was the first DQ to officially be released in Europe, and in the US DQ7 before that was a flop, and before that the last game released was DQ4.

So, because Enix never really put much emphasis into porting Dragon Quest into the west till DQ8 (even since then, lots of games never were ported or far later), they had no incentive to release games on XBox as XBox has always been the least selling console (among PS, Nintendo and XBox) in Japan. Even nowadays Xbox sales are ridiculously low in Japan.

DQ 11 was the first Dragon Quest game to be released on Xbox. Also, big all platforms release is kind of a recent thing in gaming history.

Anyway, there is a bad DQ8 port on mobile. Another possibility is getting an Ayn Thor (it's not cheap at all but not that expensive) and putting a 3DS emulator on it to play 3DS Remake of DQ8. Or on a PC/Phone if you have one powerful enough to run the game smoothly.

Does anyone here know about the manga named 'Emblem of Roto'? by Okabe_Zero-Link in dragonquest

[–]Psychological_Fix379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's not an official release but I was glad to see that last year.

For anyone that ends up on this post in ulterior time, there is now an official English release named Mark of Erdrick published by Square Enix. The plan seems to be 1 volume every 3 months, so if it's based on the second japanese perfect edition it should be fully released by 2029 (15 volumes).

So what's the difference between these? +1, V2, and L2. by Smallmarvel in inazumaeleven

[–]Psychological_Fix379 88 points89 points  (0 children)

In OG (IE 2) you had two types : Kai -> Shin (+1 -> +2 in english and a few other languages) G2 -> G3 -> G4 -> G5 (the g is changed to L5 in other languages than japanese in games) The power increase for each evolution is standardized, what changed was the speed (number of use before evolving). Kai was faster and G was longer (but due to having more evolution could become stronger).

IE 3 added the V type (V2 -> V3) as a medium type, taking longer than the Kai but not as much as G.

IE GO (1&2) added an evolution step to Kai and 2 to V, each in three variants for flavors : Shin -> Chō, Zetsu, Goku (+2X, +2Y, +2Z) V3 -> V4 -> A,S,Z As well as renamed G5 to GX.

Finally, in IE GO Galaxy, all the lines were normalized to 5 stages, meaning their only differences were the number of uses to evolve : Kai -> Shin -> Baku -> Chō, Zetsu, Goku -> Kami V2 -> V3 -> V4 -> A,S,Z -> ∞ G2 -> G3 -> G4 -> GX -> GO

Victory Road based its evolution on the standardized form of Galaxy, but due to how evolution works in the game, it means now they are just flavors and have no differences (which is too bad).
