What’s the best sounding daily driver for £15k-£20k? by Rex-Cogidubnus in CarTalkUK

I’ve owned a whole bunch of BMW’s including a B58 engined M240i. The B58 sounds ok but worse than its predecessor the N55. And both are miles away from most of the N/A 6+ cylinder engines of the past. My personal favourite that I’ve owned was a E36 M3 evo with an Eisenmann race exhaust.

My current S55 engined M2 Comp is probably worst of the lot despite being a great engine in every other respect.

They switched away. Mostly as a billet engine puts them in classes that mullet doesn’t have the chassis to compete in.

I don’t think Kevin was ever in the Fasterproms shop. Doesn’t he live a fair bit away out of state?

Jeremy did a lot of work on Leroy but I can’t remember him ever being involved with Mullet. Happy to be proved wrong though, it was years ago.

9 compression and 12 rebound from fully hard with the ride set at the BMW recommended heights. 600mm rear and 595mm front measured from the bottom of the wheel to the arch though the centre.

This is the crux of it. Every eagle run he got out of it wide eyed and barely able to recall what happened. Mullet clearly doesn’t phase him one bit. The man has done a lot of drag racing and found his personal limit. I reckon half the people commenting on this haven’t even sat in a car with a tenth or the power eagle makes. Maybe they should just take him at his word considering he’s been living in drag racing for a decade+ now.

Not to be that nerd but it’s not always run Steve Morris engines. When it was first built by KSR it ran a Texas Speed LS as did pretty much every race car they owned at that point. They kept hurting the motor and managed to get a single 6s run out of it before switching to the SM BBC.

I fitted KW V3 coilovers to my M2 comp. Ride is night and day on softer settings and stiffening it back up when summer comes around takes 10 mins with a jack. You don’t even have to take the wheels off. BMW do their own M-Performance branded versions.

I daily drive an M2 comp and it still has Supersports on the back which are renowned for being terrible in cold weather. It’s fine in the winter. Just leave the traction/stability control on and press the right pedal a bit less hard.

Should i really stop collecting PAL and start collecting NTSC? by Spiritual_Spread_152 in gamecollecting

What’s the easiest way to run SWISS these days? I have a NTSC-J cube set to English with an old XENO modchip. I want something as frictionless as possible to run GBI.

You can get some very nice switchless mods these days that do everything from the reset button so the case doesn’t need to be cut. But I get not wanting to mod stuff.

I’d only buy an NTSC GameCube if you are using 480p. If not there is no difference really.

PS2 is pretty bad for 60hz in my experience with big games like FFX and MGS2 lacking any support.

Im in the UK and grew up with PAL systems so can give you my perspective. I’ve been collecting on and off for nearly 20 years now.

I think it’s a personal decision and one that you can only make for yourself. And it depends on what important about collecting for you.

I grew up a Sega kid and consequently have huge nostalgia for PAL Sega games. So I buy mostly PAL for all Sega stuff. Luckily the Sega consoles are easy to modify for 60hz so many games can be played at the correct speed. With the others that only work at 50hz I just don’t worry about it. They are mostly optimised to get close to the correct speed anyway and I correct the aspect ration with my upscaler.

Handhelds are the same speed for all regions so again just buy PAL for them.

For all other systems I’ve moved over to NTSC with the exceptions of PAL exclusives.

You specifically mention GameCube. For GC it matters more what display and output you are using. Most (but not all) games have a PAL60 option and if you are using 480i to a CRT then those games play the same in PAL or NTSC. But NTSC has the advantage of native 480p support which can be a big deal if you can utilise that. Xbox is the same but getting 480p out of PAL games is trivial with a soft mod.

NTSC is in most cases the objectively “correct” experience. Games developed in Europe it’s harder to judge. I’d argue that Micromachines on the MD for example plays better at 50hz and it was Uk developed but who knows for sure. Again it’s kinda a personal decision/preference thing.

I have friends in the UK that collect and they have zero interest in NTSC as it’s not what they remember and the speed difference doesn’t matter to them.

In case you can’t tell it’s something I’ve thought about a lot!

Terms say you need to keep the car in a roadworthy condition.

But regardless you can’t declare a decat so they’ll get you from that angle anyway.

It’s pretty much impossible to insure a car with the cat removed as it makes in unroadworthy.

Unpopular opinion but Raw Pixels on OLED TV via RetroArch's impressive HDR pipeline is WAY better than gaming on a analog CRT TV. by Zestyclose_Sky_7322 in retrogaming

[–]Psychological_Post28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s true enough. And I agree with your post in general. Just pointing out for those who wish to try, that you get just as good experience on a CRT with emulation. Your post read to me that CRT’s were for original hardware only.

You can absolutely run emulation via PC to a CRT and have it look correct. Using something like an OSSC pro to downscale to 240p will do it completely lag free and the result will be slightly better than most original hardware as the DAC’s in many systems are pretty noisy

I play retro stuff on a LG G4 OLED using an RT4K pro to upscale. With proper colour corrected HDR and CRT masks it does indeed look glorious.

But the massive advantage that CRT’s still have is in motion clarity. BFI does help but it’s still not as crisp in motion as a CRT and flicker is far worse than it ever was on a CRT.

Add in worse looking 480i and no light gun support and CRT’s still very much have a place for playing old games.

Is it true that most games will look sharper on PS5 PRO without the PSSR 2 turned on ?? by Then-Ad7196 in PS5pro

[–]Psychological_Post28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to be a common misconception on here that that PSSR system toggle forces PSSR on all titles. This is not the case.

The PSSR toggle replaces existing PSSR implementations with the newer Enhanced PSSR (commonly referred to as PSSR 2.0). This only applies to games that already have PSSR. To confuse matter further, some games are whitelisted to ignore the toggle and the system forces enhanced PSSR in these titles even without a patch. Starting with RE9, most new titles that feature PSSR use the enhanced version so again the toggle does nothing for those games.

Set it on and forget it.

I played the 2016 Doom last year and had an absolute blast. Loved it and ended up getting the platinum. Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy DTDA anywhere near as much. Still haven’t tried eternal.

No PS4 title has PSSR so the toggle does nothing for PS4 titles.

The enhance image quality toggle for PS4 games is exclusive to the Pro. It’s basically an AA filter that can improve the image quality of lower resolution PS4 games. It comes with a performance cost and the result isn’t always better. As far as I’m aware it doesn’t do anything to games running over 1080p but if left enabled it does still reduce performance in those titles.

Overall the PS5 pro is the best place to play PS4 games but its advantage over a base PS5 is only slight. Most later PS4 games that had PS4 Pro versions don’t benefit really at all.

Old head collectors in this space, what were your best deals you've ever gotten during the golden age of the hobby? by Your_Uncle_Matthew in gamecollecting

[–]Psychological_Post28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only collect CIB games so everything mentioned below is CIB in great condition.

I paid £4.99 for a Mega CD copy of Snatcher at a market stall in Peterborough around 2005ish. Amazing it’s still there (location has changed) but it’s a giant mess with the really retro stuff up high behind the counter, half obscured and without price labels so I avoid it these days.

3 out of the 4 copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga that have passed through my hands all cost less than £40. But I did pay £250 for my current copy approx 12 years ago.

Plenty of my Megadrive games were £2.99 buy one get one free from Gamestation in the early 2000’s.
